Northumberland's first mobile library van, affectionately nicknamed 'Bessie', was purchased in 1951. A second van for the North of the county was purchased in 1953 and was immediately successful with 6,078 books issued in the first 8 weeks

The first county librarian was Ruth Eveline Baker, who was 28 when appointed as the County Librarian for Northumberland in 1924

The rural library scheme began when Northumberland County Council adopted the Public Libraries Act in August 1924, receiving aid from a Carnegie UK Trust Grant

With funding from Arts Council England, a project celebrating Northumberland Libraries' centenary included an exhibition, oral history recordings, library events and a theatre performance telling their story

The team offer CPD for school and college staff, sharing examples of effective practice from the start of the student journey through to the completion of A-Levels
