Happy Birthday to the stunning & talented Sigourney Weaver, 10/8/1949.

I could, literally, watch her in anything.

Oscar nods:
86 Aliens
88 Working Girl
88 Gorillas in the Mist

Her nom for ALIENS is one of most correct & inspired in Academy history.

Happy Birthday to the delightfully demented Guillermo del Toro, 10/9/64.

With bangers aplenty, few filmmakers have as solid a resume! Early critics & audiences have raved about FRANKENSTEIN, so I expect one more.

Although I love many, PAN'S LABYRINTH will always be transcendent for me.

My ★★★½ review of Angst boxd.it/bjlisN

Unnerving Austrian thriller traps us with inner thoughts of deranged madman.

No-frills presentation sometimes feels cheap. But frenetic camera work, discordant sound track, & creepy inner-monologue create visceral masterpiece of "yuck."

Japanese shocker works as spectacular mood piece, both police procedural & psychological thriller.

Horrors presented in almost dispassionate manner, lending feeling of inescapable dread. Brilliantly acted.

Who wore it better?

Toxie through the ages:
1) Mitch Cohen: 📽 TOXIC AVENGER (1984)
2) Peter Dinklage: 📽 TOXIC AVENGER (2025)
3) Constantine Maroulis: 🎭 TA: MUSICAL (Houston production 2012)
4) Ben Irish: 🎭 TA: MUSICAL (West End filmed for BroadwayHD 2018)

My ★★★★ review of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage on boxd.it/bj3eZR

Prioritizing mystery over blood splatter, Argento's first film may be best.

Stylish, thrilling, eccentric characters & outlandish plotting delight. Fun, silly, but gorgeous visuals & Ennio Morricone score.

Agreed. I, literally, started with ZERO friends one year ago. Just posted about things I liked & have genuine enthusiasm about.

Met many great people. Many of them dropped away. Met many more. It's not brain surgery, just interacting with things you like.

Also, on topic of new Bluesky users: I get asked a LOT about how to find followers.

Don't worry about "followers." Like, repost, and/or comment when you see things you like. If you're not willing to engage first, people probably won't discover you.

When started with Bluesky year ago, Starter Packs were such a big thing. As I wasn't popular kid, just made me feel excluded.

Glad they don't seem to be emphasized as much these days.

That said, if new & posting great movie content...drop me a comment. Always want to follow new voices.

Hated it as well...and am reasonably appreciative of some of Noe's work.

📽 Lifelong Favorite:

If you love moviemaking, Richard Rush's THE STUNT MAN (1980) will delight.

Equal parts action, comedy, romance, it's mayhem when fugitive hides from law on movie set. Oscar nom Peter O'Toole is magnificent as manipulative director Eli Cross. What's real? Illusion?

#NowWatching CURE (1997). Director: Kiyoshi Kurasowa. Koji Yakusho, Tsuyoshi Ujiki.

Seemingly unmotivated murders are linked by their savagery & one cop's pursuit of the truth may be his undoing. Rewatching a fave of contemporary Japanese horror.

My ★★★★ review of The Craft boxd.it/7BO9Fh

Witch, please! Be careful what you wish for! Sometimes, your teen angst bullshit comes with a body count. Effective 90s chiller, with great soundtrack, succeeds in being exactly what it wants to be.
A ★★★★ review of The Craft (1996)
Andrew Fleming's THE CRAFT doesn't aspire to be a great work of art. It succeeds, in large part, because it is exactly what it is intended to be. Slick, entertaining, & effective, this is a stylish 90...

Cops vs Condoms: Prophylactic Menace

Offensive, problematic, in poor taste? Absolutely. But also better & funnier than it has any right to be! Spoofs hard-boiled detective noir & mad genius sci-fi. Fully plotted, not just one gag.

My ★★★★ review of Hour of the Wolf boxd.it/biG4zD

With Bergman, von Sydow, & Ullmann, trust you're in good hands.

Fascinating journey into darkness of one man's soul. Reconciling art with real world, von Sydow becomes completely untethered. Haunting, surreal, & impeccably performed.
