Processing a midlife autism diagnosis through film. And other adventures.

I have a filthy mouth, but in a good way; like an unhittable slider.

I've started a @letterboxd.social list of films that resonated with me as a late-diagnosed #autistic. None of them are about autism, but some aspects speak eloquently about the autistic experience. I hope to write about these in more detail if the autistic energy gods permit it.

I’ve never felt it was bad for me to be a white person in America, Mr Vice-President. I have learned that it’s bad to be a cunt, though.

As I try to unpack my place in social spaces as an autistic person, my current math says if you did not consider that something you planned would make me uncomfortable, I get to regulate myself by roasting you and your plans mercilessly with no expiration date.

Episode 2 of Chernobyl with my wife and she’s ready to kill all men.

Fair.

James Ransone? Fuck, man. Gonna have to do a Generation Kill rewatch in his honor.

I usually love the Variety actor pairings, but JLaw and Leo was a huge miss. But I never imagined Leo would be so humorless and insufferable.

The Disclosure Day trailer is heartbreakingly weak. If Spielberg’s name weren’t on it…

I don’t know if it’s my favorite movie of the year, but the movie I’m telling the most people to see as the year ends is Sorry, Baby.

Do they do job interviews where you don’t tell about yourself? Like… where do I do that?

Consider how you actually feel, and don't just accept what you've been told you SHOULD feel.
If you could tell your younger autistic self one thing, what would it be and why?
December 11, 2025 at 9:56 PM
This is kind of funny, because there's nothing I fear more in life than thinking I'm smarter than I actually am.
Autistic employees are less susceptible to the Dunning-Kruger effect
Autistic workers may possess a distinct advantage. New research shows they are less likely than non-autistic colleagues to overestimate their competence, sidestepping the cognitive bias known as the D...

Why is Sally Hawkins missing from the Best Actress conversation?
A ★★★★★ review of Bring Her Back (2025)
Lots of awards talk right now and I’m not hearing a lot of talk about Sally Hawkins who has created one of the great cinematic villains of all time. Terrifying and reprehensible and evoking sympathy y...

When @mangiotto.bsky.social mentioned Faerie Tale in a review it took me weeks to find a copy. I thought that was bad, but now I’m trying to get my hands on Ax by Donald Westlake.

Holy fuck.

I realized why I hate prank shows. First, it's a playground for assholes. Second, autistics are so uncomfortable with social norms that if we ever did our own prank show, the pranks would be so specific and personal, we would legit ruin people's lives.

I'm counting on the Academy to nominate the following films for Best Picture so I can see them in the theater with the Oscar Pass:

Sentimental Value
No Other Choice

Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson exchange glances for two hours, and it's awesome.
A ★★★★ review of The Lost Daughter (2021)
I don't know how this film would have played had I not read the book first. In first person from the main character's perspective, the book adds depth and complexity that I'm not sure if the films cap...

An absolute GOAT level thriller. Just needs time. And not to be lost in the detritus of Netflix.
A ★★★★★ review of Rebel Ridge (2024)

I liked a lot of last night’s Welcome to Derry. Pennywise was as great as he’s ever been. The Black Spot massacre was appropriately brutal. My only issue:

Smoke inhalation would have killed damn near everybody in that building. I don’t know if there was a half dozen coughs in the entire sequence
