Rounding off the list with @carlsagan42.bsky.social's Super Mario World troll romhack, which is actually the first SMW romhack I’ve properly played! Great showcase of how you can bend Super Mario World to your will in order to kill the player in funny ways.

Kinda had to do this one after beating Seasons. Definitely much more puzzley than Seasons. Very cool to see how the two games interact when linked, feels ahead of its time for Game Boy Color games.

Got an urge to play it after the Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 Switch rereleases, so I went back to the Super Mario 3D All Stars version. Turns out I’d got right up to the final stage so quickly beat it to add it to this list!

Stylish game with very clever world-jumping mechanics. Well designed to balance being puzzley with never becoming overwhelming or frustrating, minus a couple of boss fights.

Linear, shorter and a little more of a caricature than the other two, but still nice to return to these characters. The escape room segments honestly might be better than anything in Zero Escape.

Finally beat this after playing it on and off for almost 20 years. Interesting how you can feel the Capcom Zelda design trends that carry on later in Minish Cap. Definitely aged very well for its era. I used the NSO rewind a lot but shh don’t tell anyone.

Something a bit different here. Very fun itch.io game, like a Minesweeper RPG. Definitely didn’t spend about a solid hour playing it instead of working on my sound design project and making lunch. You can play it here: danielben.itch.io/dragonsweeper

Finally got round to properly playing this after buying it in 2018 and playing for literally 1 hour. I wouldn’t have thought a pinball platformer would work but somehow it does!

Bought on a whim because it was cheap on iPad and I played the other Room games years ago. This one is easily the best of them. All the puzzles are tied together much more nicely and cohesively than the previous games, and it finally feels like it fits the “Room” name.

Is it controversial to say I think I like this more than Undertale? Ends on a cliffhanger, obviously since the story is only half over. Susie is now my favourite character and "Your taking too long" has permanently entered my vocabulary.

By my rules of “roll credits = beaten game” then I just beat this, but we all know that’s not really how this game works. I started a second playthrough but that's it so far, so I'll be coming back to it at some point.

Surprise purchase because I saw it for 20€. Neat twist on the WarioWare formula, but sadly often more frustrating than the other games as a result. The actual minigames are still good though.

Nice update to the old Lego game formula, though can feel a bit overstuffed at times. Can confirm that The Rise of Skywalker is better when it’s made of Lego.

Very clever and intriguing puzzle-roguelike hybrid, only made slightly frustrating by its RNG elements. Probably the game that hooked me the most this year, and enjoyed watching streamers play through it too.

Randomly had an urge to replay this and ended up doing the entire story mode. Probably will never fully complete the Adventure mode though because it's ludicrously massive.

A nice little sci-fi narrative adventure thing. It's the kind of thing that Game Pass was really good for, I doubt I would have ever tried it otherwise.

Finished The Teal Mask right at the start of the year, and then The Indigo Disk just before Pokemon Legends Z-A launched. I think I'm in the minority, but I actually preferred The Teal Mask overall, but very much liked the Unova callbacks too.
