What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Like, I wanted to meet Jake in London but the cheapest I could go for was £230
cinzia-dubois.bsky.social
Damn. If you go to London from Edinburgh it could be anything from £140 (if you’re lucky) to £350 (return tickets). To be fair it’s usually cheaper to fly, but even then I don’t think it’s much cheaper
cinzia-dubois.bsky.social
I’d already paid £191 for two of them It was brutal being charged an extra £50 for the same journey but different train (again, due to them cancelling the journey). Ironically I got the cheapest options.
cinzia-dubois.bsky.social
After having to pay another £50 because my train got cancelled (but through insane loop holes I don’t get refunded for my cancelled train — don’t, I’m already insanely upset over it), I was going to lose my mind if they didn’t check my ticket.

They did. People will retain their limbs. This time.

I couldn't find my usual memory sticks, so I grabbed an old one that was lying around.

It has all my old essays from my undergraduate. I thought I lost all of those with my old laptop. I fully cried.

I'm sorry: "if I wish to see a virgin on-screen"?
My Favorite Actress Is Not Human
Tilly Norwood doesn’t need a hairstylist, has no regrettable posts, and if you wish to see a virgin on-screen, this is one of your better chances. That’s because she’s AI.

A picture of some AI girl standing on an AI landscape with an AI monster behind her. I'm gonna be so real: she looks about 14

I went to the doctor again regarding my ongoing chronic stress. As she reassured me that she believed a lot of my health conditions would reverse were I to socialise more and take up a few hobbies, it suddenly dawned on me that I was being medically prescribed to get a life.

Ohh OK! I was scared you somehow thought I disagreed with anything you were writing! hahah

I'm sorry I really don't understand what angle you're coming at because that's literally what I'm saying?

I'm in no way "downplaying" Trump. I'm literally talking about how many people agree with him -- the danger isn't just a singular figure, it's everyone who agrees with him. I don't think people are sleeping on Trump, I think they are bolstering him and giving him what they want because more agree
cinzia-dubois.bsky.social
Trump doesn't scare me as much as the fact that Trump is only doing what he's doing because more people agree with him than disagree with him.

“Ah," said Mr Pin. "Right. I remember. You are concerned citizens." He knew about concerned citizens. Wherever they were, they all spoke the same private language, where 'traditional values' meant 'hang someone'.

Am I reading this correctly?

A grad student ... in Computer Science ... enrolled in an undergraduate seminar ... in the American Indian and Indigenous Studies program ... where he ignored the readings and hijacked discussions to talk about Israel and defend its actions in Gaza?

What the hell?
nkalamb.bsky.social
Cornell is cancelling a distinguished professor's classes on Gaza and suspending him because of the complaints of a student who previously served in Israel's military surveillance agency and was literally recording the comments of other students in class and deliberately derailing discussion.
Early last semester, Droubi said, students began approaching Cheyfitz with complaints that a graduate student in the “Gaza, Indigeneity, Resistance” class appeared to be recording them, possibly to “gather their names and comments” and intimidate them. “We believe that a student came to the course for the sole reason of surveilling and potentially harming students in the class,” Droubi said. “That ended up proving itself to be true because multiple students came forward and shared their concerns with Professor Cheyfitz.” Cheyfitz said one Palestinian student quit the class after telling him she felt upset and frightened.

According to Cheyfitz, the graduate student often steered conversations away from the assigned readings—which at that point mostly focused on definitions of genocide and international law on Indigenous rights—to defend Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza and argue with others in the class. “He clearly had not done the readings,” Cheyfitz said. “It was disruptive.”

Cheyfitz said he met with the graduate student in late January and spoke to him about concerns from his classmates. During the conversation, he asked the graduate student to drop the course, and by the next class, he did, Cheyfitz said. The graduate student, Oren Renard, a PhD candidate in computer science whose identity was confirmed by other students in the class, previously served in Israel’s elite military surveillance agency, Unit 8200, according to his LinkedIn profile.

But yeah. Every day I'm reminded of how bigots, despite their political affiliation, maintain zero empathy for those they hate, from internet commenters to JK Rowling & governments.

They never take a pause to check in on their bigotry, & as a leftist, I'm tired of doing the emotional labour.

Asking those of us who see murder, war, pedophilia and rape as evil to "check in on our empathy before using a generic term" while not speaking to people who see being gay, trans, a working woman, someone who seeks abortion, people of different religions as evil was an...interesting choice.
cinzia-dubois.bsky.social
The people reading this book are likely not those who think queer people or abortions are evil for example, BUT she didn't challenge them AT ALL even if they did read the book. She talked about the wrongness of prescribing the term evil to Hitler, pedophiles, murderers and rapists.
cinzia-dubois.bsky.social
Finally, her scientific stance went too far in terms of ignoring the reality of things. I know one academically can't make generalisations, but to say that child rape "MAY" cause harm to victims is like trying to be academically sound when saying being stabbed repeatedly "MAY" hurt.
