Republicans have retreated to a small federal program that covers emergency room care for those who can't pay. It does indeed help cover care for illegal immigrants, but the thing is, Reagan signed it into law. Read about it in The Breakdown from @citizencohn.bsky.social:

This is a really outstanding post. "That’s the point of the compact. .... It is about control. Specifically it is about turning existing federal law, over which the administration has limited control, into terms of a 'deal' that offers the government much more control."

I thought I'd put the administration's proposed "compact" with universities in context, so I wrote the blog post below.

It's especially for journalists covering this story!

Many details about how the compact itself works and why the administration has retreated to this strategy.

Seems like a good time to revisit why we require hospitals to provide emergency care, no questions asked -- and why we help them with the costs.

And how the president who signed those provisions into law wasn't Joe Biden.

It was Ronald Reagan. www.thebulwark.com/p/government...
Illegal Immigrants Are Already Getting Health Care Under Donald Trump
The program financing ER care for illegal immigrants has been around for four decades, and not even Trump wants to take it away.

Fortunately @thebulwark.com crack production team was able to improvise, and insert a graphic www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQC7...
Screen shot of me during the interview, with an image of the same ATPM movie poster superimposed on the bookshelves behind me (I was at a public library)

Saw the movie when I was young and -- cliché warning -- it absolutely made me want to be a journalist

So excited to talk about it youtube.com/watch?v=oQC7...

Only problem: I wasn't in my office, where I have the film's promo poster on display

We talked about how the movie is a time capsule of journalism and writing -- and movie-making too

And of course parallels to now, a "Watergate every day" as @jvl.bsky.social put it www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQC7...

The Republican strategy is essentially "We're going to talk about illegal aliens so you won't notice we're taking away your health insurance." @citizencohn.bsky.social:

Almost have to admire Johnson's ability to keep a straight face while saying Trump and Vought love federal workers, take no pleasure in these decisions, etc.
citizencohn.bsky.social
Speaker Johnson fretting about impact of a shutdown on low-income Americans minutes after boasting about GOP cuts that will mean millions lose health insurance -- and millions more losing food assistance -- is an interesting contrast

"[Republicans] don't think they can win the [health care] debate. So, they are trying to move the debate over to immigration."

Bari Weiss and JD Vance are very similar figures with very similar skills.
citizencohn.bsky.social
Every time you hear Trump, Vance or a GOP leader talk about “illegal aliens” getting health care, remember they are trying desperately to dodge blame for an insurance premium jump about to hit 20M+ Americans

Also they are lying www.thebulwark.com/p/republican...
The Republican Shutdown Argument is a Giant Lie
No, Democrats aren’t trying to fund health care for “illegal aliens.”
