Iles (aka Anthony Berkeley Cox) writes as though thinking of Cary Grant all the way. And who wouldn't? Hitchcock's altered ending works just as well as the book's: one of the great horrifying "happy" endings in cinema.

to feel slightly queasy about a human journey that depends on binding up a wild creature? (And I love KES, don’t get me wrong.) How many hands is that? In any case, I liked this more than I expected to, despite some issues, and it also has Brendan Gleeson brightening up periodic flashbacks.

the weird-assery of BUGONIA gets in over a throwback crowd-pleaser like SONG SUNG BLUE. I like both movies, but it probably wouldn't have happened like that 15 years ago.
