I completely agree that we need to be mindful of the limitations of this nation, but there is also plenty of reason to celebrate and recommit ourselves to the mission outlined at our founding.

The larger point is that we have no idea where we are along a Civil War timeline. Confederates themselves had no idea where they were along the timeline. Contingency defined their lives as it does ours. Finally, Confederates were far from admitting the possibility of defeat at the end of 1862.
