Despite frequently declaring that he is not an abolitionist, Lincoln states he is morally opposed to slavery and that it should not be allowed to expand into Federal territories. That is enough for Southerners to break up the Union.

Prologue. The 1850’s began with the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act as part of the Compromise of 1850. The Act required officials and citizens of Free states to cooperate in the return of escaped slaves. The conscience of the North began to move towards Abolitionism.
