Born from opportunistic conquests and feudal lordship, these polities ruled over majority non-Frankish populations, depended on fortified ports, mercenaries and military orders (Templars, Hospitallers), and survived by fragile alliances with—and rivalries among—larger neighbors (Byzantines, Seljuks, Fatimids). Their narrow, exposed borders (especially isolated Edessa) made them strategically precarious and set the stage for later Muslim reconquests and the Second Crusade.
