Today I talk about the brouhaha over Bari Weiss ascending to the Editor-In-Chief position at CBS News. I argue that the real problem how news media has become obsessed with news personalities, with objective fact-telling the primary casualty.

Bari Weiss and the Decline and Fall of The Western News Empire
Ms. Weiss' ascention is a symptom, not a cause of news media's downward spiral.

In my post today, I consider the alarmist trend to compare every conceivable public health issue as “the new cigarettes”. It’s most often misleading, isn’t working and maybe we should stop. Have a read!

We need to stop comparing everything to cigarettes.

In my post today I look at our new study of playing as or against orcs in video games. Consistent with previous data, exposure to evil orcs in a video game was not related to racist attitudes .

This “orcs are racist” hypothesis is scientifically dead.

A New Study Examines The "Orcs are Racist" Hypothesis
The idea is probably dead...alas we'll be stuck with its consequences for some time.

Recently the Economist Magazine claimed a study in India provided a “ringing endorsement” of cellphone bans in schools. But did the study in question do any such thing? Or was this yet another example of the kind of sloppy journalism that typifies moral panics?

A pretty good takedown of the MIT #ai study that claimed using AI to help write essays damages the brain. This unpublished study was accepted by the news media and general public with zero critical thinking and can support no such conclusion.

Today, I look at the Trump administration's claims via RFK that Tyelon causes autism. I focus on one systematic review used to support the government's case. Is it strong evidence that we should be concerned about women using Tylenol during pregnancy? Have a read!

Today I look at the cancel culture on the right (mirroring 2020 on the left) that has arisen in the wake of #KirkAssassination.

Some online responses to the murder have been gross. But I worry about giving power to either mobs or the government to censor speech.

This assumes there is a real "loneliness epidemic" but I'm given to understand the evidence is equivocal, despite the public news media narrative.

Today, I look at the concerns that #AI is disrupting student learning.

There's probably real reason to believe AI is disrupting out-of-class writing. But is this much different from past plagiarism, essay mills or Cliffnotes?

I appreciate @JohnStossel for having this debate on #socialmedia #smartphones and other tech panics. This was a great opportunity to raise some of my concerns with claims being made by Jonathan Haidt and others.

In my essay today, I look at the obsessive lefting narrative that, in the age of #DonaldTrump, the left is fighting fascism. At this point I think we can say this strategy has been a disaster for the Democrats

I argue they should try a newer, saner strategy.

I have this vague sense that power analyes may in some cases miss the point. I agree with their worth to some degree, although trying to detect smaller and smaller effect sizes may actually cause it's own false positive problems given limits of methodological precision in social science.
