Position Type: Assistant Professor (Tenure Track Position) in Environmental Biology Position Type: Regular Salary Range: The salary range for this position is $102,060 to 113,443, depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college level. The position comes with generous benefits (scu.edu/hr/benefits), including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, and University contributions toward retirement. Housing assistance programs (for rental and purchase) are available. Purpose: The Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks applicants for a full-time tenure-track position in Environmental Biology, to begin Fall 2026. We especially welcome applications from candidates in the subdisciplines of conservation biology, wildlife biology, marine biology, landscape ecology, agroecology, or ecotoxicology. The successful candidate will conduct applied research that can be supported by external funding and provide opportunities for involvement by undergraduates. SCU is on the quarter system and tenure-stream faculty are expected to teach the equivalent of six courses per year (two lecture courses, or a single lab course, each quarter), while actively engaged in scholarship. Teaching expectations include a lower-division lab course in Environmental Biology (ENVS 21), an upper-division “skills” course focused on GIS, applied statistics, or research methods; and at least one other upper-division lab or field course in the candidate’s area of specialty. Post-doctoral research and/or previous undergraduate teaching experience are highly valued, as is community-engaged scholarship. The successful candidate will start on September 1, 2026. The university offers many different opportunities to develop teaching skills through Faculty Development, including regular lunchtime workshops on pedagogy, teaching and technology grants, communities of practice, teaching mentors, and a scholarship of teaching and learning faculty group. Ignatian pedagogy, a hallmark of Jesuit, Catholic universities, is based on the principle of cura personalis, that is, teaching the whole person. Teaching will be evaluated according to the Teaching Effectiveness Standards and Evaluation (TESE) document developed by each department. More specifically, duties include but are not limited to the following: Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair, including courses such as introductory environmental biology, required skills courses in GIS, statistics, or research methods; and upper-division environmental biology electives. Develop a program of research at SCU that will result in meeting the Environmental Studies and Sciences Department’s established scholarship standards for tenure and promotion. Provide effective service to the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, the University and the profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship, such as service on committees and participation in professional organizations and activities, as appropriate to rank and experience. To ensure consideration, please send: (1) curriculum vita; (2) evidence of teaching experience or potential, such as summaries of past teaching evaluations and/or sample syllabi; (3) a representative example of your published or in-progress scholarship, (4) a letter of interest that describes your five-year plan for your research, your potential to create intra- and interdepartmental connections at Santa Clara, and your ability to foster inclusive pedagogy; all in a single PDF file; through the Workday application system, by October 1, 2025.
