I assume many of these people thought of Twin Peaks as a quirky parody of soap operas without taking into consideration the darker or more experimental elements of the series, which is unfortunately why Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway (both masterworks) were shunned at the time of their release.

This unfortunately happens everywhere. At a 4k screening of The Horse Thief I attended at Cannes (with Tian Zhuangzhuang in attendance ), a number of French students in the audience started heckling the film. It’s appalling how little respect some audiences have for cinema.
