Politically conservative, Socially progressive (My politics are complex and nuanced.) Retired from a career that went many places I didn't expect. Avid cyclist. Married to the same brilliant woman since 1982. I'm comfortable with cognitive dissonance.
I understand completely. I'm (A) a bit of a history nerd, and (B) thought it was worth mentioning that the intentions were right, but the way it was done was a product of the times (which I suppose is just another way of saying (A).)

Among the things banned:
- Poison Gas
- Combatants not wearing Uniforms (to distinguish combatants from civilians)
- Military encampment among civilians
- Attacks on civilians
- Certain munitions

Obviously, those laws are ignored by some, but that's the historical answer to your question.

I see your point. A little history, if I may.

After the horrors of WWI, nations gathered to draft a set of international laws to govern war. It was seen as a possible first step to eliminating war entirely, but it obviously didn't work out that way. Those laws were agreed to, and are enforceable.

Wait. Those things are Socialist. So are things like utilities regulation, the Interstate Highway System, and a lot of other things that are part of the fabric of American life.

Socialism is not inherently evil. Complete socialism is ineffective and wasteful, but so is any system at the limits.

As a Christian, who has actually read Jesus' teachings, these people are many things, but follower of Christ ain't one of them.

Only *one* order of magnitude?

Can't disagree, there.

Thank you @sciencesinger.bsky.social for a wonderful evening, and a reminder that differing viewpoints are to be treasured, and learned from.

Um.....

Wow.

<facepalm>
September 23, 2025 at 10:13 PM
And I reflected back on some discussions on here, where any difference in point of view has been subject to ad hominem attack, and calling the divergent point (and it's presenter) inherently evil.

We separate into tribes without knowledge or understanding.

Chimp poop.

So, other than bad data, statistical manipulation, and being correlation-based with no causal chain, what's the problem?

(In case someone isn't sure, that's sarcasm.)

"It’s a desperate act in a world where no words are left."
September 21, 2025 at 4:21 PM
"So long as the focus remains solely on blaming either party, the despair that feeds this violence will only contaminate more of American life. When we try to find our politics neatly reflected back to us in each of these acts, we forget that the bullet itself is often the message."

Let's be honest, it's not like people don't believe ridiculous stuff that's posted on here...
September 21, 2025 at 3:54 PM
Um, nope. But who the hell is Donny?
September 20, 2025 at 10:47 AM
Your sarcasm almost lost me, until that last sentence. Then I read all your other comments.

You make a lot of assumptions based on the idea that I disagree with you in one area.

Sorry, I don't "toe the line" on either side. Life and reality are too complex for that.
September 19, 2025 at 7:11 PM
I might agree that you are morally superior in some aspects of your life, if I knew you better.

However, from your statements, I have reason to suspect that some areas of your life can stand improving, as can mine.
September 19, 2025 at 6:39 PM
Ah, yes. The uninvited dude. Sorry, I didn't realize this was a private party.

Carry on.

Just remember that if freedom of speech only protects speech you like, it doesn't protect your speech, either.
September 19, 2025 at 6:31 PM
Yes, there's always someone for whom one reply isn't scathing enough.

You're making a lot of assumptions about me, and my positions. That isn't dialogue.

I don't claim superiority, I just try to call it as I see it. Feel free to disagree. That's what freedom of speech is for.
