I was one of the last groups to get a student grant and what it gave me was the opportunity to learn, explore, and make mistakes without those mistakes carrying a financial penalty. Students now don't have that luxury. So the focus becomes high grades, not learning. Fees should be scrapped

Bed quilt?

I agree. And l think it bodes badly and universities should not adopt AI in the ways that they have. But l also think that unis have forgotten that their core function is to teach. We need to realign our societies and universities so they foster learning, not cheating.

Another problem is students are highly stressed. About money, the lack of opportunities in the UK, where they belong and what kind of world they will have to deal with/climate change. Unis don't empower them to deal with that and a lot of what they study lacks relevance. Nihilism is the result.

l do point that out to law students. But they often say to themselves that they'll use AI to get them through uni, but once they are in practice they won't use it. But by that stage they are too used to AI doing their thinking for them, so it's a hard habit to break.

High fees also force students to work very long hours, so they are time poor and AI shortcuts the time they need to spend writing assignments.
November 29, 2025 at 10:32 AM
That. High cost of education is also a major factor, as students feel they don't have the luxury of getting things wrong as the costs of failing a year are so high. Which is partly behind the rise in AI usage.

They seem very clean and very new, for a farmers tractor. All the farmers tractors I am familiar with are old and pretty knackered because they get a lot of wear...New tractors are expensive!
