This is genuinely all so much stuff and I know these specific feelings super well- ND kids + crowds + noises + logistics + timings to remember + personal physical stuff?? It’s a huge juggle, but especially for spicy brains ❤️ The main good thing about a week like that is when it’s over.

The supervising professor was HORRIFIED by this story and was like, this is literally what extensions were made for, are you insane? Meanwhile I’d been very sure I’d be told I should have had it finished earlier so I didn’t even ask for one 😅 Many more years in academia have taught me better.

Had an anaphylactic reaction to hidden nuts in the baked treat my mum got me (oops) while I was pulling an all-nighter to finish my honours thesis on the due date, spent four hours in hospital, came home doped up, strung out, and successfully wrote the last 4K words with no sleep. Got those honours!

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

I reckon that there's a growing vibe of it around, but maybe not consciously connecting it to the way things work. I've been feeling like deactivating everything lately because I feel like it's doing really bad things for my brain, but I don't know that it would be better that way either 🫠

Sending you a hug! ❤️ It's tough on here because without the algorithm posts can just sink. There is SO much stuff I only later realise I've missed because of timezones- that in addition to things being a little quieter generally really does make it feel horrible sometimes.

I don’t think it was you! It was VERY early on in fandom and IIRC it was a couple of fans who posted an earnest happy birthday to the real Bonnet with a pic of them at the gravesite, like distinctly not drawing a line between real history and fiction, which was the aspect that felt problematic.

Anyway I tell my kids that story often because I was not a stupid kid but I certainly felt very alone and very unappreciated by the adults in my life, so being taken seriously by some guy on the Internet? Amazing (not amazing). And it was so much harder to find out anything about anyone then.

Also had a dude attempt to groom me on a Clive Cussler books board when I was 15?? He eventually asked to meet up and I was like sure, where? 😀 Which was when he realised I was in Australia and he was in the US and disappeared.

Fond memories of getting obsessed with the internet for the first time in 1995- I had my own computer but no connection because no wifi then, so I had to use the family computer for that. Always a countdown to when my dad would bust in and yell at me to get off the damn phone line.

We have officially defeated them! Got some good luck in it absolutely pissing rain the next day, and left the fan running overnight so they didn’t hop back in in the morning, and they’ve finally moved along.
