Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is pleased to announce that Newry Leisure Centre Pool will reopen on 12 March following the completion of major refurbishment works. Newry,Mourne and Down District Council’s (NMDDC) environment committee officer say they are “not permitted” to provide findings on the use of solar panels with other local authorities. A motion to engage in forums to share information was agreed this week, however a financial report to convert closed down municipal dumps is being kept confidential.

SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty is calling for an end of the geo-blocking of RTÉ programming in the North. Geo-blocking refers to the inability of many viewers in the north of Ireland to access RTÉ’s coverage of Irish sporting events due to rights restrictions. SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has said that proceeding with a fixed bridge across Newry Canal would be a “spectacular own goal.” Mr. McNulty was speaking at Stormont on the Department for Infrastructure’s proposal to construct a fixed bridge across Newry Canal as part of the Southern Relief Road project. Health Minister Mike Nesbitt travelled to Dublin for his first official meeting with Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, TD. The ministers met at the Irish Department of Health where they discussed strengthening cross-border healthcare collaboration, before touring the site of the state-of-the-art new Children’s Hospital. The Ministers’ discussions included the potential for the development of a paediatric pathology service for the island, collaboration in relation to workforce issues, health inequalities and cancer cooperation.

Detectives are appealing for information and witnesses following a recent burglary at a house in Newry. Detective Sergeant Dougherty said: “Officers received a report on Saturday, 22nd February at approximately 7.30pm that a house in the Elmwood Park area had been broken into. “Entry was gained via a back door that had been forced open. It’s understood wardrobes in a bedroom had been opened and rummaged through – a sum of cash was taken.

Police are appealing for information after a police vehicle was deliberately rammed outside Armagh in the early hours of 21st February leaving two officers injured. Around 2am, officers on mobile patrol in the Farnaloy Road area of rural Madden observed a Toyota Hilux turning off onto the Hanslough Road. The driver of this vehicle then failed to stop for police when required and, following a short pursuit, the Hilux driver then stopped suddenly before reversing into the police vehicle at speed.
