Intellectuals, “Anti-Intellectualism”, “Bullshit” and the Problem of our “Collective Understanding of the World”: Reviewing Fassin’s Misère de L’Anti-Intellectualisme
In spite of its first edition being quickly sold out, Éric Fassin’s last book has been met with a surprising indifference in terms of reviews, either scholar or in the mass media—something which contrasts with Fassin’s role as a public intellectual and the usual reception of his work in the public sphere. In the preface to the second edition, he notes that the book was the object of only one journalistic review (Buisson 2024) and two video interviews (Regards 2024; SQOOL TV 2024) and he explains “the book’s non-reception by the media” “not despite its timeliness, but because of it”: “In a context of anti-intellectualism”, he remarks, “knowledge is naturally silenced” (Fassin 2025, 13).
