CATF’s UK Methane Regulatory Roadmap shows a clear path forward:

✔️ Quarterly leak detection & repair
✔️ Zero-emitting equipment
✔️ Prompt repairs
✔️ Strong performance standards
cleanaircatf.bsky.social
The EU Methane Regulation will soon require importers to measure, report, and meet strict emissions standards. The UK must act to remain competitive.
cleanaircatf.bsky.social
Without regulation, the UK risks:

❌ Undermining its net zero goals
❌ Losing access to EU markets
❌ Becoming a dumping ground for high-emissions fuels

Methane is 80x more powerful than CO₂ over 20 years. Cutting it is the fastest, cheapest way to slow warming.

Yet UK fossil fuel operations remain dangerously underregulated. The UK is Europe’s 2nd-largest producer and 3rd-largest emitter - but lacks clear rules to manage methane. #ActOnMethaneUK

Methane regulation is the foundation of the UK’s net zero strategy. Without it, clean energy priorities like blue hydrogen & industrial decarbonisation cannot credibly move forward.

A new joint letter to Ed Miliband calls for strong, enforceable methane rules in the National Methane Action Plan.

Methane traps over 80 times more heat than CO₂ in the first 20 years after release. Reducing it is one of the most immediate opportunities to slow warming.

The regulation is on the books. Implementation pathways are available. Now it’s about delivery.

In September, CATF & 13 NGOs issued a letter calling on the @ec.europa.eu to:

▪️ Defend the Methane Import Standard in talks with the U.S.
▪️Maintain strict MRV & traceability for suppliers
▪️ Reject exemptions that undermine effectiveness

The CFTC’s decision to withdraw its carbon market guidance is a step in the wrong direction.

“Carbon markets can play a role in mitigating climate change, but only if the underlying carbon credits are high-quality,” says CATF’s Kathy Fallon.

Today’s #SOTEU struck a cautious tone — but this is a moment that calls for urgency.

From ambitious climate targets to industrial decarbonisation, Europe must move faster, invest smarter, and lead globally in the transition ahead.

With fragmentation & conflict on the rise, the EU must diversify clean tech supply chains & forge mutually beneficial partnerships. The climate & energy diplomacy strategy should advance new clean Trade & Investment partnerships that tackle the whole clean tech value chain.

The €500m ‘Choose Europe’ package to attract top scientists is a welcome step—but without turning R&I into commercialisation, EU impact will remain limited. The upcoming Fusion Strategy & geothermal plans are good opportunities to better connect research policy to industry.

Despite a brief nod to staying on track with climate goals, VDL barely mentioned climate action, favoring ‘more omnibus’ simplification packages instead. This raises concerns for years ahead on the prioritisation of climate action.

Lead markets can safeguard competitiveness & accelerate decarbonisation. The upcoming IDAA & Procurement Directives review, introducing ‘Made in EU’ criteria along sustainability, should drive demand for low-carbon products, with clear labelling & demand-side mandates.

Despite progress on the single market, Europe is far from a true Energy Union. Stronger coordination, smarter grid planning & urgent action are needed. Grid infrastructure is key to scaling clean energy.
cleanaircatf.bsky.social
Competitiveness must be central to the Union. Yet only 11% of Draghi’s proposals have been acted on and none of these are on energy. Industrial Accelerator Act, Single Market Roadmap, Grids, 28th Regime, Innovation Act - are welcome but the EU must turn promise into progress.
