I grew up with Prime, amen to that. But I think it also falls back to either too much to make, not enough time, or aim high, get higher marks. Companies are often requiring huge studios to meet sales quotas or sometimes forgetting this: It's not a movie, it's a video game.

One last note: Metroid is often known and expected to be one of the more detail required games, where to look can be just as important as the gameplay, but people forget what make a game good it seems, boils down to "Are we having fun?" Kirby doesn't require realism, as long as it plays well.
