🧡 BREAKING: Historic win 🧡

The High Court of Justice of Galicia has ruled for the first time that authorities failing to properly address water pollution from industrial livestock are violating people's fundamental rights – and should be held accountable 🧵

“At a minimum financial institutions must set out red lines on what they finance & rule out fossil fuel companies refusing to divert from business-as-usual.

“Only then can these UK banks reduce the real risk of being held to account in court on climate.” Dan Eziefula, ClientEarth lawyer 3/3

“After a ClientEarth complaint, UN human rights experts warned bankrolling fossil fuel expanding orgs could be violating human rights law.

“Now, ING faces a landmark lawsuit in NL for its contributions to the climate crisis & in France BNP Paribas faces legal action over fossil fuel financing. 2/3

💸🏭New research reveals that some of the UK's biggest banks are investing more than ever in fossil fuels.

“The UK’s financial sector has a mammoth, outsized impact on the climate – and these fossil fuel investments carry a significant legal risk. 🧵

Repealing it would mean dirtier air, higher bills, fewer jobs & more floods & heatwave risk. This law is not a political football - it's a show of leadership the UK should be proud of.

We need it to keep promises on track & without it ordinary people pay the price.” Kyle Lischak, ClientEarth 3/3

👉 It’s why we’re shifting to cleaner, cheaper energy, protecting families from the price of fossil fuel dependence.
👉 It underpins 1000s of green jobs & is powering the move away from fossil fuel.
👉 It helps reduces the air pollution responsible for tens of thousands of early deaths each year. 2/3

📢 📢 📢 "The #ClimateChangeAct isn’t just about climate targets; it protects real people.

Without it, climate policy would become voluntary, subject to short-term politics rather than binding duty. 🧵

The fight for nature just hit the streets.
Our message is loud abd clear: STOP THE OMNIBUS. 🚌🌿
We made our tour around the EU institutions to make sure decision-makers can’t look away.
No backroom deals. No rollbacks.
Just clean air, safe water & a future for people and nature.

Erin’s legal victory over a utility co. in California that was poisoning local water with extremely toxic chemical chromium-6, led to a $333m settlement for affected communities & spotlit industrial chemical poisoning.

☠️ But the EU's proposed new ‘restriction’ on chromium-6 would undermine it all🧵

Bold leadership from @london.gov.uk and hard work by communities, health experts & civil society led to this result.

London has hit a HUGE milestone in the fight for clean air by finally meeting legal levels of air quality.

It is a win for all who live & work in London: better health & wellbeing, fewer sick days & less pressure on the NHS.

World leaders gathering in NY for the #UNGA80 is a timely reminder of the need for global co-operation in the face of challenges we face together.

But this is not the end of the story - international commitments must be implemented and enforced. Protected must mean protected.💪 #30x30 5/5

The Treaty will provide a framework to help achieve global biodiversity targets, including the commitment to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 through marine protected areas (MPAs), as well as obligations to assess the impacts of extractive activities like deep-sea mining and industrial fishing.4/5

The High Seas account for 2/3+ of the world‘s ocean, yet only about 1% are currently under legal protection.

The ratification follows the recent string of opinions & rulings from international courts making clear that States must tackle climate change & protect marine environments. 3/5

Last week, the last of the 60 countries needed to ratify this historic agreement finally did so. It's an important win for the numerous ocean champions, communities, organisations & States that have worked tirelessly to make this a reality, & in the fight to tackle the nature & climate crises. 2/5

🌊🐟Great news for the ocean and all of us who depend on it🐟🌊

The High Seas Treaty (#BBNJ Agreement) to protect vulnerable ocean habitats can finally kick in!

This is another powerful tool we can use to make sure we #TurnTheTide on ocean protection for people and nature. 🧵

🚨 Court action🚨

We’ve filed a case against Nestlé Poland for misleading recycling claims on plastic water bottles.

Claims on bottles from one of its water brands including ‘I am recyclable’ and 'I am made from another bottle’ falsely portray plastic as circular & fully recyclable ⬇️

The tightening of guidance follows a complaint we made to the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) in 2023, which prompted the OEP to investigate the issue.

The new guidance now mentions:

👉That the legislation is underpinned by the precautionary principle

👉The potential impacts of emergency authorisations on areas protected for nature

👉That "harm to pollinators may have both environmental and economic impacts" 2/3

🐝Good news for UK bees🐝

The UK government is tightening its guidance on those applying for emergency use of unauthorised pesticides, including ones that are potentially extremely harmful to bees and other pollinators. 🧵

Lough Neagh shows there are communities all over Europe living in 'sacrifice zones' like this, where their quality of life is deprioritised in the name of industrial profit.

The UK govt's inaction on this ecological crisis is bad enough, but the impact of the pollution on residents means it has a moral & legal obligation to act.

👉The ECHR (which still holds in the UK) gives strong grounds to argue inaction on toxic pollution may constitute human rights violations.4/5
