Doctors monitor the pulse.
SaaS founders monitor user activity.

A stable heartbeat means health.
A stable activity score means retention.

But when the pulse becomes irregular, doctors react immediately.
When user engagement starts fading, I do the same.

What I thought I had to do to find first 100 users:
"If I spread Ads for 10$ per registration this should work"

What actually works for 0$ on reddit:

Don’t just track overall funnel metrics
Keep an eye on every user.

How far do they get?
Which features do they actually use?
When does engagement start to drop?

Patterns tell one story.
Individual users tell another.

The real insights come from watching both.

Hardest part of building a SaaS?
Not coding or marketing.

It’s showing up every day when it feels like nothing is working.

Most quit too soon.
The ones who win are the ones who outlast the doubt.

I know there’s something wrong if a user pattern looks like this.

But how do I handle it?

- I reach out personally ✉️
A simple “What’s missing?” often sparks valuable insights.
- I offer a quick win ⚡
Something that immediately helps them see more value.

More than 50% respond right away.

I thought I know how users behave …

Until I tracked the search bar.😅

I spent $ for failed registrations

We ran Google Ads, users signed up, and then… nothing.

Checked the user data:
90% dropped off instantly

Why?
Most were on mobile
Our onboarding was desktop-only

They weren’t the wrong users.
We just made it impossible for them to start.

Building a SaaS feels like running uphill in the dark. Some days, you see the peak. Other days, you wonder if there’s even a mountain.

The only way to reach the top? Keep climbing.

I’ve worked on a bunch of SaaS projects, and honestly, it was always super frustrating not knowing what users are actually doing inside the product. Most analytics tools felt like way too much work or just gave me numbers without real insights. So I decided to just build something myself - Userlog.
