It is the proper (only) way to do it

crossworlds isn't a bad game by any means, i just find the theme song to be laughably bad compared to even the most divisive sonic racing games' vocal songs lol.

the lyrics say nothing. literally just a basic explanation as to what you do in the video game. did you know sonic racing crossworlds is a video game?

Sonic R had a song about racing and it made you feel something. it earned that cheesy chorus while this song flounders.

It's just a subgame included in Kirby Planet Robobot so I don't know if it counts, but the score-based gameplay with bonuses for building large KO chains and clearing stages quickly is very reminiscent of Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong respectively.

Kirby 3D Rumble is the closest example I can think of. Unlike the later Kirby's Blowout Blast which has larger scrolling levels, 3D Rumble consists of multiple sets of static screens. Each one has a unique pattern of enemies, and the challenge comes from clearing them out quickly and efficiently.
