(By the end of term 1 I had talked to the aforementioned student about this, and she stopped doing it. This was around the same time that she started asking for academic support and doing much, much better in school)

Because that’s *true* and it’s in the kid’s voice. It gives me insight into who they are and where they are at socially, academically, often emotionally— especially when it’s a panicked email about a grade or a homework question. I can respond to those cues in a way that is helpful!

I had a student last year who at the beginning of the year used AI to write her emails to me (because she didn’t feel like her own words were good enough). It muddled up communication a lot. I would much rather have the messy emails where they accidentally put everything in the subject line

“One of the negative consequences AI is having on students is that it is hurting their ability to develop meaningful relationships with teachers, the report finds. Half of the students agree that using AI in class makes them feel less connected to their teachers.”
Rising Use of AI in Schools Comes With Big Downsides for Students
A report by the Center for Democracy and Technology looks at teachers' and students' experiences with the technology.

Jack Posobiec explicitly says that "Antifa" dates back to the Weimar Republic, explicitly acknowledging that this administration is opposed to those who resisted the arrival of Adolf Hitler in Power.

Any kind of bullying is fundamentally anathema to public education. Which is probably another reason they like it.

Not all 12 year olds are evil, but I can concede that some of the worst people do act like the worst 12 year olds, just aged out of the time that their teachers and parents are able to give them consequences for their actions. And I think a lot of them still resent the teachers who tried.

The grand unified “Everyone is Twelve” theory is a legit contribution to contemporary thought and critique. We really are ruled by evil adult children!

I subscribed to clarkesworld last month and just read this, and as a middle school teacher at an urban public school for very motivated kids, I loved it

In a future where the rich kids are being raised with a digital Cyrano beside them to sweet-talk their way into the best jobs, four friends train together for a battle to prove that other kinds of minds might still have the edge.

You would not BELIEVE how hard it is to find a half decent superintendent. That’s why districts hire contractors to do searches.

Breaking news: ICE stops family at gunpoint—smash car window on top of newborn baby.

"I was screaming that there was a baby. But they didn’t care," cried mother.

“I covered my baby with my body—I was so scared he was going to be hurt because glass was landing on him."

Here’s a picture of my parents’ cat from the summer. My mom died 6 months ago this week. I’m sending you lots of love.

but there’s been lots of complaining and entire lawsuits about the changes to admissions policies in Boston, the storm has been weathered, and Michelle Wu is cruising to re-election.

I teach at an exam school in Boston (and Mamdani went to a specialized public high school in NYC) and I believe in the importance of G&T education and I think Boston has done a good job in the last few years bringing more equity to exam schools, and some controversy is worth weathering.

If you read the article it sounds like this is a topic that he is developing his views on. It also sounds like there’s a lot of very good reasons to phase out gifted programs for kindergartners and start the programs in 3rd grade. It sounds like it really needs an overhaul.

it may feel a little like homework, but i genuinely think people should read the lincoln-douglas debates to see what the practical politics of anti-slavery looked like in an environment where the public was neutral to hostile to the question of emancipation

We don’t talk enough about how racists and authoritarians are the ones who actually genuinely hate this country.

Yeah it is not an under the table payment position. At all.

I think it’s pretty important context, for instance, that in the same press release where ICE claimed this they also claimed that a man who grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from a Maryland public college in 1998 “entered the US in 1999”. That would seem to speak to credibility.
clserdaigle.bsky.social
Would it kill the reporters at the New York Times to, I don’t know, Google the subject of a breaking news story and note in the article the inconsistencies between what ICE says and other publicly available information?
Screenshot from the New York Times: “ICE agents approached Dr. Roberts while he was in his vehicle on Friday morning, and he sped off, according to a statement issued by ICE. He was later found, and his vehicle was found abandoned near a wooded area, the statement said. The agency said that he had a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a hunting knife when he was detained.”
clserdaigle.bsky.social
So ICE claimed that Dr. Ian Roberts first entered the US in 1999 and had an active deportation order when he graduated from Coppin State in Maryland in 1998 and ran track and field for them.

They are blatant liars. Nothing they say should ever be considered credible.

If they can’t read yet. It’s very rare to have access to actual reading instruction in secondary schools and it’s impossible to access most of the curriculum if you can’t read. And socially being held back earlier is far less disruptive and demotivating than failing classes in HS
