Hi Fiona! I run the Living Lab at @energysyscat.bsky.social . Great to hear your experiences of our A2A heat pump trial and thanks for sharing it here! We've received your emails and the team will be replying shortly. Best, Claire

Right now, the number of UK homes with EV charging is around 3%*, but this will rise. 𝗪𝗲’𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗘𝗩 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱. We’ll need charging systems that smooth demand across the day. (see links in replies)

The pink profile on the graph shows only the homes from the same group who have told us they don’t have an EV or charger (though a few may have EVs that they haven’t told us about). The big daily demand peak is 17:00-17:30, as we’d expect, with low usage overnight rising from 05:30-06:00.

We see a notable spike at 00:30, when Octopus Go’s cheap rate kicks in, and a big dropoff at 05:30 when it ends. We also see lesser effects from other EV tariffs. Most people charge their EVs 2-3 times a week, but some Living Lab homes have more than 1 EV, so may be charging more often.

The blue profile on this graph shows electricity smart meter consumption from 854 homes, for a week in November, in our Living Lab. Of those, 408 have told us they have an EV or home charger. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝗩𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴.
