This happened just before we released the Mother 3 patch, actually - some gaming blog was like "don't play this game's translation, the act of translation changes too much" and I guess I should've just taught everyone Japanese instead

Ah yeah, I ran into this all the time with One Piece, I look forward to the far future when the series is done and it can be translated as a finished work, translation is always like a big patchwork quilt with these long-running series

This is my EarthBound Legends of Localization book

Every time I look at the book (including this page) I just want to make it better, I find my explanations could always have been better, it's a curse of authorship I guess

From my book about #Undertale 's official English-to-Japanese translation

I'd like to expand on this for an article on my site, so if you have any examples of "imprinting" situations in fandoms, please let me know

Some quick examples include FF4, FF6, Trails in the Sky, what else?

Yeah, it's fun to figure out the "how" of making a ROM translation but then the actual work is overwhelming

Tomato Adventure is probably my biggest public example of this but I got a dozen+ never-started projects too, it's probably what every creative person in any field runs into I suppose

Yep! Good to see you, it feels like I left the Internet and went to space for a while and when I came back the Internet is way different and everyone is in different places going by different names, it's been wacky trying to get back up to speed

Some old advice about starting big projects (game translation projects in my case, but a lot of it is probably universal)

Looking through my old Wanderbar dev folders, I REALLY want to continue developing/streaming this stuff sometime

Right now I'm especially interested in doing a comparison of Working Designs' Lunar games for Sega CD someday

Wow, that's great! I'm glad it helped 👍

You encounter the Sweltering Snowman.

Posted for no reason in particular.

(made by @reidman.bsky.social and @clydemandelin.bsky.social for an April Fool's 1999 joke)
An image of a fake "Sweltering Snowman" encounter in the game EarthBound, made by Starmen.net users reidman and Tomato for an April Fool's 1999 joke.

Back in the day when we made this, I added a secret pixel in the corner somewhere as a "watermark" to prove it was fake and by us

Or at least that's what I vaguely recall

Chicago is mostly a huge tower dungeon

While studying Choctaw last year, I decided to revisit this comedic & stereotype-heavy JRPG about Native Americans

Unfortunately, this game remains Japanese-only after all these decades

Let's examine Japanese stereotypes about America in this weird JRPG!

This is all so great, I need to learn more about the gaming culture of each region from the era now, I'll need to invent a new type of university where I can take such courses

Haha, Sans' origin story was Zelda III
clydemandelin.bsky.social
Oh man, I forgot about the Finger ad for EB, what a weird set of ads they ALL were

Makes me wonder what ad ideas DIDN'T make the final cut
clydemandelin.bsky.social
What the heck, that feels so non-Zelda in terms of vibe too

- "If the shoe fits..."
- "This game stinks"
- "More fun than a ferret down your trousers"

What are some other crazy game marketing quotes?

I'm not sure, but I've asked Fangamer in the recent past to post digital versions of it and other "secondary" books that I've written, in order to avoid this exact situation

I'll continue to ask, but if you could ask Fangamer too that might help
clydemandelin.bsky.social
(There are no actual fighting mechanics in this game though, because that's the hard part - I mostly just wanted to see how things would look/feel)

Years ago I made a bare-bones "EarthBound with Smash Bros.-style battles" game in a day or two - mostly to get it out of my system & to teach me basic Unity animation #gamedev #earthbound #smashbros

I don't intend to revisit it but here it is if you want to try it! tomatogame.itch.io/fartbound

If we check their hack maybe it'll have the secret ingredient we needed all along

I wonder what their Mr. Saturn text looks like too
clydemandelin.bsky.social
whoaaa, that's gonna open up a lot of new potential for things in the future

also I saw that a Chinese team translated Mother 2 (M1+2 gba version) into Chinese thanks to your own English hacking, which is really cool to see and hear

now to remake mother 3 in mother 1's engine
