In Jèrriais, "i' vente la pé du dgiâbl'ye" (it's blowing the hide off the devil), or for fishermen who had been to Canada, "i' vente la pé d'un orîngna" (off a moose)

Same year SpaceX promised a powered landing on Mars

The whole reason this “feels” true is old people are healthier and don’t look old any more. Victor Meldrew was 53!

Everyone understands the rhetorical device of giving your ambitions and ideals your own name as if you already embody them, some people just find it kind of repugnant
January 22, 2026 at 6:44 PM
People already have a right to end their lives in all circumstances. This draft legislation is about the right to have a doctor kill you

We’re on day 2 of a total meltdown because one Euro account mildly criticised Bernie Sanders
January 20, 2026 at 1:34 PM
Yes, he’s doing a great thing in Minnesota, but I wish people would reacquaint themselves with what he said about eg the Al Ahli hospital bombing before saying they’d die for him or whatever

It doesn’t foreclose anything, it’s a statement about the present not the future. You can and should improve but as long as you’re still harming people that is who you are
January 17, 2026 at 8:00 AM
There’s also no law against the chronic patients ending their own lives either

I was taught this in GCSE Economics. They showed us a cartoon of everyone doing different jobs and having to barter their produce. I think they were dressed like cavemen
January 14, 2026 at 8:06 AM
Look, we’re not going to agree about how difficult it is, but the point stands, people have a choice between “you have to try harder to use it” and “algorithmic feed controlled by billionaires” and they’re smashing the billionaire button with no regrets

Can someone actually go on mastodon.social and describe what you think is so hard about clicking “Create account” and typing in a username and password? You’re talking like I’m asking you to compile the Linux kernel
January 13, 2026 at 8:07 AM
Come on, you’re being silly. It’s almost identical to Twitter and Bluesky. People exaggerate how complicated it is as an excuse for why they only use billionaire-owned platforms. The truth is people want the algorithm and don’t care about the downsides.

$100 was hyperbole, but which social media apps do you use that have received less than $10 million in funding?
January 12, 2026 at 10:50 PM
If people won’t use a platform unless it invests $100 million dollars in UX, we’re never getting away from the billionaires

Only equivalent to three alphanumeric characters (36*36*36=46,656) and a lot harder to remember and type

You see what Republicans do and you don’t want elected Democrats to oppose it, you are the MAGA my friend

Mary II deposed her father James II with the support of parliament, but it involved her Dutch husband’s mercenaries sailing from the Netherlands so people call it an invasion
January 6, 2026 at 7:58 AM
People gave all kinds of reasons why they wouldn’t use Mastodon, the truth is no one wants to read their friends’ posts in chronological order
December 30, 2025 at 8:10 AM
But I can’t? I guess one is called Jack. No idea who Kate Winslet or Billy Zane played. That’s less than I remembered from Avatar
December 24, 2025 at 7:08 AM
Like, Inception came out around the same time. Name a character from
Inception without looking it up
December 22, 2025 at 8:09 AM
The name thing is overblown, as if people usually remember the names of characters from action films, let alone ones in a made-up language. I like Avatar and watched the first two this week, and I could only confidently name 2. The names just aren’t important
