Congratulations to all of the authors on this paper! I have been incredibly grateful to all of you for your help and guidance. It was literally a dream come true to work on this project and provide an answer to this intriguing question after such a long time. Thank you for your hard work!

**Independent shifts are all you need**:
We closely replicated all of our experimental findings in a grid-to-place cell model. No other cell types, no feedback from hippocampus. The degree of module independence directly controlled the degree of remapping.

**Shifts, but not rotations, of grid patterns enable remapping**:
We found no evidence of differential rotation of grid modules, even when place cells globally remap. All grid modules - and directional and border-tuned cells - rotate coherently between rooms.

**Smaller differences between modules lead to partial remapping**:
Module realignment predicts not only global remapping, but also partial remapping. We found a direct correspondence between the degree of independence across modules and the extent of place cell remapping.

**Independent grid realignment coincides with global remapping**:
With simultaneous recordings of 3+ grid modules and place cells, we show that when grid modules are decoupled, place cells globally remap. Something the field has assumed for many years, but shown here for the first time!

**Grid modules are functionally independent**:
When an animal moves between rooms, each grid module undergoes a unique change in spatial phase. Coherence within each module, but differential changes across modules.

Thanks to Neuropixels, we were able to record grid cells in multiple modules and place cells at the same time, and we finally have an answer.

How can the brain create countless unique memories using a single, universal metric of space? We’ve been waiting for the answer to this for two decades!
