As the Trump admin attacks worker protections nationwide, I’m proud that today we passed my bill, Intro 780.

My bill expands safe and sick leave for more than 3 million New Yorkers, giving them more time to care for themselves and their families.
cmsandynurse.bsky.social
Today we passed Intro 621, the first bill in my #NoLockouts Act.

Illegal lockouts are harassment. With this bill, tenants can fight back and landlords will be held accountable!

🚨This Saturday! Join me and @cmjengutierrez.bsky.social for a day of action as we stand up against ICE!

As part of a joint effort with the @nycprogressives.bsky.social, help us share Know Your Rights materials, legal resources, and more across Bushwick. tinyurl.com/BushwickAgainstICE

Between all the L’s the Mayor took last week (3 veto overrides) that you might’ve missed the biggest one: he also lost in court trying to bring ICE to Rikers.

We won't allow this rogue agency to tear families apart with impunity.

Join @nycprogressives.bsky.social for a day of action against ICE on Saturday, September 27 @ 11AM!

Council Members across the city will be participating in community flyering, tabling, marches, and rallies to demand an end to the disappearances

I also passed Intro 1242-A, one of the first bills to come from the Lippman Commission’s Blueprint to Close Rikers.

It establishes clear leadership and accountability for closing Rikers Island within City Hall and puts us on track to achieve the vision of a Renewable Rikers.

Today we proved that people power and worker solidarity will always beat the 1%. Dark money and backroom deals won't win. Grocery delivery apps built their profits on poverty wages. Today, we correct this.

All workers deserve dignity and fair pay.

These measures will better pay and conditions on the job for grocery workers and protect street vendors from unnecessary criminalization

These efforts were led by sponsors CM Krishnan @cmsandynurse.bsky.social @cmjengutierrez.bsky.social and movement fed up with the status quo

BREAKING: @council.nyc.gov has voted to override the Mayor's vetoes of three bills sponsored by Council Member Shekar Krishnan, @cmjengutierrez.bsky.social, & @cmsandynurse.bsky.social, which remove criminal penalties for street vendors and expand protections & fair pay for grocery delivery workers.
Breaking News graphic about NYC Council overrides mayor's veto to ensure minimum pay and workplace protections for grocery delivery workers and repeals harsh penalties for street vending.

Not only did a supermajority of the @council.nyc.gov pass Int. 1135, but his own agency enthusiastically supports the bill. If the Mayor wants to lose yet another battle with the Council we’ll oblige him.

Not sure what’s more shameful: Mayor Adams doing the bidding of a multi-billion-dollar corporation; breaking a 2022 promise to workers; or abandoning a largely immigrant workforce already under federal attack.

We issued the following statement condemning the mayor's MAGA move to veto the street vendor protection bill, Introduction 47-B

CM Shekar Krishnan's bill is a caucus priority that passed with 40 votes, including unanimous support from our members, on June 30 (1/5)

I look forward to continued oversight of DOP to ensure staff get the support they need and that DOP stays focused on its core mission:

Keeping people out of custody and setting them up for success in our communities.
cmsandynurse.bsky.social
Reforms are welcome, but DOP must clearly communicate its vision, theory of change, and the data behind it to the Council and its workforce.

Change can’t be driven by one person’s anecdotes; it must be grounded in evidence.
cmsandynurse.bsky.social
I urge Mayor Adams to invest in this critical workforce that we’re losing in droves. Probation Officers need fair pay, competitive retirement, and, above all, the respect and support they deserve for transforming the lives of people impacted by the justice system. We can do better!
cmsandynurse.bsky.social
Since becoming Chair of @council.nyc.gov's Criminal Justice Committee, I’ve heard from countless concerned Probation Officers raising alarm about the agency’s direction. For 15 months, they’ve asked for help. Yesterday’s hearing finally brought their concerns to light. 🧵

Extreme weather is a part of New Yorkers new reality. As our environmental and housing crises collide, those living in basement apartments are most at risk.

@voteshekar.bsky.social and I are calling on NYS to expand basement conversion programs across flood-prone communities like ours.

"By refusing to include the hardest-hit neighborhoods in the revamped pilot, New York State is complicit in the ongoing danger facing these residents," write Council members @sandynurse.bsky.social and Shekar Krishnan. Next Monday I'll be chairing an oversight hearing with a focus on DOP's organizational strategy.

We'll be digging into their operations, which play a key role in keeping people out of our city jails and setting them up for success.

Tenants shouldn’t have to wait weeks or months for basic repairs to their units.

That’s why I also introduced Reso 990 urging the state to pass S.5622A to strengthen the 7A program and make it easier for tenants to get critical repairs and live with dignity.
cmsandynurse.bsky.social
Too many New Yorkers are forced to live in unsafe, illegal basement units, which puts their lives at risk.

That's why @CMShekarK and I introduced Reso 991, urging NYS to pass A.597/S.2507 and expand the basement conversion pilot program to include communities like East NY.

Today we passed my bill Intro 1135, which brings pay parity to tens of thousands of third-party grocery delivery workers.

Today, the Council passed Int. 1135-A, sponsored by @cmsandynurse.bsky.social, to set a minimum pay rate for grocery delivery workers and bring parity with food delivery workers. It’s part of a larger package to protect delivery workers across NYC.

Looking towards District 37, we were able to secure $408 million dollars, inclusive of our City of Yes commitments!

We invested deeply into our communities with funds going towards education, public safety, health, housing, infrastructure and more!
