Since the phony Gulf of Tonkin, 8/2/1964 incident which significantly escalated the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, committing the first combat troops in 1965 and authorizing massive bombing campaigns after the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, which gave him broad war powers.
