I just posted my thoughts regarding today's needless & unwarranted firings at NOAA/NWS. I am beyond pissed off & I'm so, so, so sorry to everyone that has been affected by this utter bullshit.

Feel free to share, because you should be as rip roaring pissed off as I am.

I wanted to add some thoughts regarding today's mass firings of new hires & recently promoted staff within NOAA, including NWS offices, SPC & NHC. I've heard a number of somewhere between 600 and 800 people within NOAA were fired with just an hour or two worth of notice.

These firings included mission-critical roles at the National Weather Service, including meteorologists (some of whom I know personally), data and computer scientists who are responsible for maintaining and upgrading the numerical weather models & technicians who are responsible for maintaining the infrastructure the NWS is built on (includes radar sites, data connection servers, satellite feeds, etc).

How is this going to affect you, the end user that gets your weather info on your weather app?

Well, if the infrastructure of the NWS degrades or goes down completely, it would mean important weather data would not flow from the NWS to the public. This includes model data, weather forecasts and weather warnings. For you, it would mean the data that goes into that weather app would become null and void very quickly. It would also mean weather warnings will either be delayed or not even arrive to your phone. This would mean your phone would not activate if a tornado is on your doorstep.

If radar sites go down, it would mean the radar app you use would no longer provide the imagery you use to see if its about to rain or not or if a supercell is about to hit you. We would be literally blind to what's coming.

If satellite data goes down during hurricane season, it would mean we would no longer be able to track tropical storms or hurricanes. It would also mean we would be blind to what's coming in terms of tropical activity.

There was a time just 26 years ago that large parts of the East Coast of the United States were evacuated needlessly due to the uncertainty as to where Hurricane Floyd would go. Si…
