I was reminded of how arduous it was to get Machado to Oslo to receive that medal in the first place: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Only for her to give it away in return for... Trump backing Maduro's deputy over her.

Quite a tragedy, really.
María Corina Machado: Inside the operation to sneak Nobel winner out of Venezuela
The man who led the operation says María Corina Machado crossed “very rough seas” in “pitch-black darkness”.

More so than her encouraging Trump to do pretty much exactly what he did?

FOR THE GREATER GOOD

He might find that difficult without US boots on the ground, or a Venezuelan government that 1) cedes control over its oil deposits to American companies, and 2) stays in power long enough to allow the US to do that.

Setting aside the political legitimacy of this morning's actions for one second, and taking stock of the situation: The US is proposing to run a country with three times as many people as Belgium, with famously mountainous terrain, divided historical cultures, and widespread extreme poverty.

How?

Diplomatically, what are they condemning?

A key strategic ally and main superpower acting against a government that all of them would happily see the back of?

Their only concerns would be protecting their interests against the destabilisation of the region that this will inevitably cause.

I'd suspect the price point ($14/mo) gatekeeps most of the former group out. Unless they're oddly high-earning teenagers who also don't know how to talk to someone their own age.

It's *definitely* the latter.

Remember Torsten Bell's somewhat tortured defence of why Labour *weren't* lifting the two-child benefit cap a year ago, having spent the previous few years calling for exactly that as head of a thinktank.

Maybe if they had a leader who said, "We're doing these things because it's right we do them."

That's... rich, from someone who didn't bother to check the author before bashing their keyboard.

James did not write this article.

Have you heard of the term "useful idiot"? Before defending a position, learn more about who and what you're protecting.

I have absolutely no sympathy for the Tom Pidcocks of this world who blindly defend something they lack complete knowledge of. Their ignorance is their own problem.

You know when *certain riders* were throwing themselves in front of IPT's ownership whilst defending their participation in the Vuelta?

It should be recognised that they were doing so while IPT were suing a fellow rider for €30M. That's the hill they chose to die on.

I live in the city centre of a university city (Sheffield). The cheapest pint of lager you'll find in a student bar here is £4, which is pretty good compared to the rest of the UK.

Tesco's sells a 4 pack of San Miguel for £5.00 with a Clubcard.

If you're young and broke, the maths ain't hard.

It would seem the simplest explanation in a cost-of-living crisis now around three years deep

Comedians will only make jokes that the state-controlled regulator has pre-approved.

Glory to our Great Leader.

I mean, he can only beat what's in front of him (Almeida with a very disjointed and unsupportive team, and Tom Pidcock).

And if we're being kind, it wasn't a display of absolute domination over either of those targets.
September 17, 2025 at 12:31 PM
Fundamentally, this is legally and philosophically incorrect.

A ReSPECT form not recommending resuscitation (DNR is outdated) absolves healthcare and medical professionals from their (usual) duty of care to provide emergency care.

Assisted dying is actively providing a therapy to terminate life.

We've seen the WhatsApp messages to confirm they were very much more vocal in private

I think this is the rub: to what extent are the other WT teams willing to participate alongside IPT, when they know there's a significant risk to their riders/the feasibility of the race from protests?

the nutjob school shooters are doing what they do because "they don't want to see crime"?

huh

Or when he went to Anfield as then-Culture Sec for Brown for a government that was initially declining the city's request for an inquiry

It's easy to claim cynicism, but his intervention eventually resulted in the Hillsborough Inquiry, and I don't honestly believe him being rattled was good acting
September 11, 2025 at 3:41 PM
Not entirely convinced the latter is true, tbh.

There are a lot of "college-educated" millennials and Gen Z voters from "poverty-stricken" backgrounds who sincerely hold progressive values and can see very clearly through the sneering classist lens that Zak's presenting his paradigm through.

Well, more accurately, he's particularly ruthless at sacking people from one side of the Labour Party and not the other.

Louise Haigh resigned for falsely reporting a stolen phone, which she genuinely thought was stolen in a mugging, but later discovered it wasn't.

But Mandleson survives... this.
