On resilience, Dr Chris Lee from the Net Zero Plus Demonstrator argues for taking the very long-term view when we think about GGR – look beyond 2050. Prof Chris Evans of GGR-Peat makes the point that restoring peatlands will reduce the risk of wildfire.

Researchers from the 5 Demonstrators & the CO2RE Hub are now taking questions from the audience. Some fantastic questions on learning from other jurisdictions, supply chains, energy costs, public acceptance & resilience to climate change.

We’re in the final plenary of the day – “Phase Shift: Where next for UK GGR”, chaired by @daisydunne.carbonbrief.org. Dr Alan Whitehead CBE, who is Chair of the Greenhouse Gas Removals Independent Review, has taken us through how GGR can help the UK meet its net zero targets.

Noah Deich from the US talked about the need to find common ground on GGR amidst political polarisation & the problem of low awareness. He encouraged us all to use language that everyone understands.

Asitava Sen of the Carbon Removal Alliance India discussed the need for GGR to deliver core benefits for Indian farmers – job creation, enhanced agricultural outputs & reduced agricultural costs – as well as GGR.

Prof Dr Julia Pongratz of the University of Munich emphasised the importance of creating co-benefits in the deployment of GGR techniques, for example for farmers.

A few insights from the session: Dr Andrew Lenton of CarbonLock said that GGR resonates with young people in Australia & working together with First Nations on GGR is key.

Some great insights from our panel in plenary 2 on why GGR tech is still considered a risky investment (although biochar & bioenergy w/carbon capture & storage are getting more interest from the market right now), & whether the UK will hit its target of 5m tonnes/year of CO2 removal by 2030.

We're now in Plenary 2: System Change & GGR-D Programme Impacts, chaired by @adamvaughan.bsky.social, Environment Editor of The Times. We also have Dr Emily Nurse (@thecccuk.bsky.social), Georgia Berry (Green Finance Institute) & Dr Jonathan Scurlock (National Farmers Union). #UKGGR2025
