Just a reminder that in 1912, the US presidential election results were announced in Eugene, Oregon, by the city power plant intermittently cutting power throughout the evening in a specific pattern.
ELECTION RESULTS WILL BE FLASHED The city power plant will flash the result of the presidential election tonight in the homes and places of business of all patrons, and with the street lights, as follows: IF TAFT IS ELECTED One dark flash of five seconds IF WILSON IS ELECTED Two dark flashes at intervals of five seconds each IF ROOSEVELT IS ELECTED Three dark flashes at intervals of five seconds IF THE RESULT IS DOUBTFUL Four dark flashes at intervals of five seconds each The first flash will be given at 8:30, another at 9:30, providing the result is doubtful at 9:30, and a final set of 11 o'clock The Guard office will furnish the information to the power plant from its special leased wire election service Election bulletins will be announced and posted at The Guard Office during the night. --The Eugene Guard, 5 Nov 1912
