They are a danger to any birds that compete with them for resources. Raucous and aggressive. By the time that they are perceived to be a problem, the problem becomes getting rid of them.

They are featured in the murals of ancient Egyptian tombs, which led to the belief they they originated there. Genetic research suggest that they are probably from India.
And they are also more closely related to ducks than to geese.

So nowadays 'Manor' distinguishes the property from all of those located within the boundaries of the Portland area, which was originally Crown Land allocated to George Rex (I think it was).

And its an interesting building, given that it was re-built on the foundations of the original structure, and now accommodates indoor plumbing in each guest suite, which was never a feature of the original. Floor and ceiling levels change from one area to the next as you move around. 3/

Couldn't say, only been here 20 odd years. Always been 'Portland Manor' during that time, and a country hotel. Certainly, the current and former owners have capitalised on the myth to add a bit of colour.
