The argument you’re outlining in the paper itself is interesting; I’d personally suggest that ANY type political leader is ultimately powerful because of their influence over others, and not because of any intrinsic power. This is certainly the case for Gepetto, only powerful due to his puppets.

Thanks; that’s different than the argument I’d heard in the past about SW not being feminist because she says “love, honor and obey” in her wedding vows, and leaves a position of power to give birth to a ton of kids and be a housewife and mom.

Willingham skirts closer to that line than I’d prefer in general, but I do think he should be given credit for trying to charitably portray characters who aren’t clearly aligned with his preferences. YMMV!

I think there’s a lot of nuance here; you can certainly highlight characters you agree with as role models, and Willingham does that with lots of characters, more male than female. (Bigby and Boy Blue stand out.) OTOH, any artist limits their art by having only clear good guys and clear bad guys.

And I don’t think the rest of the text demands we see Snow’s choice as the only viable one; Rose Red absolutely isn’t a stand-by-your-man type, but I don’t think the text condemns her for that.

Prefacing this by saying I don’t agree with Willingham’s politics; but his point about Snow White’s choices being feminist is fair, from my POV: she should be free to choose a very conservative lifestyle, as long as that’s not the default requirement for all women. That choice is feminism in action.

The article this is based on doesn’t seem to have any sources, so proceed with caution. That said, the core problem you describe is dead on.

Had the same concern; it’s a big deal if true but feels like it might just be wish casting.

I guess some people just hate joy?

At least LD has the comics…

We have the Regal unlimited thing; they consistently have 30 minutes of ads. But because it’s consistent, we just show up 20 minutes after the stated showtime; it’s fine

Yep, Batman Beyond is just “What if future Batman, but also Spider-man and Iron Man?”

I’m still holding out hope that Carol’s behavior can still just be chalked up to grief… but it’s not looking good!

I think you mean “game franchise success was assured by this outreach to nerdy kids who had no idea what was and wasn’t cool.”

Not that I speak from personal experience or anything…

FWIW, the line of cars on our street, which leads directly to a drop box, is as long as I’ve ever seen it…

I’d hope they can walk and chew gum at the same time: rack up big wins with material policies as their centerpiece agenda, and quietly, steadily prosecute in the background.

Arguably the Biden admin was doing a good job with the latter against J6 rioters.

3rd amendment? What's that?

Nah, Cory Doctorow is plenty smart on this stuff and he’s saying the same thing as you:

They can’t all be Kubrick’s Shining!

But yeah, King has to be up at the top of the list for highest proportion of goofy adaptations.
