Drinking beer, riding bikes and fixing stuff.

Post about active travel, music and a bit of tech and politics. And riding bikes. And drinking beer.
Interesting to see how The Times reported on the original case, and look at the results of Tower Hamlets own representative (linked to addresses) consultation which showed the schemes were actually popular.

The Tower Hamlets case legal decision was determined on the legal basis of Local Implementation Plans - councils have as statutory duty to prepare such plans, and to deliver on the agreed plans.

Journalistic neutrality from the Times Andrew Ellson.

Lambeth Council had a huge electoral mandate to deliver their Transport and Kerbside strategies via LTNs but a small group challenging on a technicality is a humiliation and a landmark case.

And 2 days ago it was cyclists on motorways. Quite something for a senior journalist who claims to specialise in "exclusive investigations and campaigns'.

Got to keep feeding the predjudices of the old, male, conservative readers. (I'm actually surprised at how many younger readers they report)

Have they taken forever to make this live? Streetview shows signs new in Oct 24 but covered up and still covered a year later.

Reverse side 'end of cycle and pedestrian zone' but I don't see any start of it?
January 5, 2026 at 12:25 PM
It clearly isn't. And it's all those historic bits of street furniture and adaptations to try to 'tame' a street that's being used as a through route when it isn't suitable
A real opportunity for a little local pedestrian priority shopping street there with through traffic removed.

Of course the real excitement comes from countries in SE Asia (Thailand, Cambodia and others) that have combined 220v with US style flat pin sockets that pull out under the weight of a cable...

The public e-bike rentals in Avignon in France are a kind of hybrid (and a very competitive pricing).

A very simple dock, then the bikes attach to each other - space efficient, tidy and can't fall over.
December 29, 2025 at 11:10 AM
They can be parked close together at much higher density than Santander, but users can park badly and if one falls (in the wind, or is pushed) it tends to take others down too.

"Corals" might help?
December 29, 2025 at 11:10 AM
It feels like bike share 'docks'/parking hasn't yet been completely solved.

London's Santander docks are inefficient (dedicated space even when empty, bikes a long way apart), expensive (power to terminal and every dock) and inflexible (can't be easily moved as a result)

The only wine with security tags in Chipping Norton M&S. Lots were more expensive. 🤷‍♂️

But an understanding of noise very quickly shows that while you’ll often see a noticeable change where rat runs are removed, boundary roads are not going to show a detectable change in noise even in the rare cases they have a material traffic increase.
December 23, 2025 at 11:37 AM
👍 Enfield did noise studies on their LTNs. Quieter inside, no impact on boundaries (as you’d expect).

Also look at the EU noise impact group.

And the issues aren't just in outer London. Battersea Bridge only finally dealt with this year. And here's one in Brixton Zone 2.
December 19, 2025 at 10:55 AM
What's most frustrating is that they don't even know the size of the problem when it comes to unsignalised crossings at signalised junctions (only those with none, not with some arms missing).

Didn't Living Streets do a project to gather this info?

Southall shop owners marching in the streets because

"the parking attendant guys are so aggressive and they don't give people a chance"

WTAF? they don't allow people to park illegally?
December 16, 2025 at 2:38 PM
Why aren't they ON the kerb line, rather than inside it for a start?

The effective width lost to the bollards is kerb + bollard + lost width due to height. 30cm+30cm+50cm - over 1m of what should have been cycling space.

This is wonderfully vague - fewer? Smaller? Different music? Cheaper?

Any of those criteria would fundamentally change what the festivals are.

They also ssy they want the council to find other (unspecified, magical thinking) ways of generating revenue.
December 10, 2025 at 11:29 AM
Last year’s legal challenges were brought by “Protect Brockwell Park” who are preparing to challenge the 2026 events.

They always claim they’re not trying to cancel the festivals but of course they actually are (in their current form)
