It's an exciting day over here at the WWF Renewable Energy Transition HQ - we're releasing our first report, this one on the impact of the growing demand for "Energy Transition Minerals" on wildlife across the globe. This is a bit of a long one, with lots of details and stats for those interested.

Lots of people think Dems are forcing these dirty coal plants to “retire” with policies and regs.

It’s simply not true!

Coal plants are incredibly inefficient to run compared to gas and renewables. This New England plant didn’t “retire” — the company closed it because it was too expensive!

Via @jvl.bsky.social "the answer isn’t to stamp out neurodivergence or “cure” people of being who they are.4 It’s to widen our arms and be more inclusive so that they can find their place in the world a little more easily.

I try (/fail) to limit my regular work when I’m traveling for work but have to say it’s lovely day to start my NY Climate Week and I certainly don’t mind MCing a work call on state level renewable energy permitting policy from a beautiful patio.

Trump and his Republican co-conspirators fear ridicule more than anything else.

They are OK with being called cruel, because they associate cruelty with power, but they know that their power stems from people taking them seriously.

Ridicule is powerful.

Thanks David - 3 6yo kids and I am stopping often to reflect on how full of joy and wonder this life with them is. That’s in no small part thanks to your “medium chill” column which I still return to when I worry about the rat race too much.

Northern Ireland man from Lisburn kidnapped by Trump’s Ice raids because he “looked like a Mexican”. He had the correct visa, all his documents. He’s never been in trouble with police.

Held in terrible conditions. A fellow captive couldn’t get his medication and dropped dead of a heart attack

Horrors of Trump detention centre: Lisburn man tells his story after arrest for 'looking like a Mexican'

Lee Stinton was lifted by US immigration police on an American street — in an incident he compared to a kidnapping.

Here, he tells us his story.

Had noticed the same but hadn't put it into words yet - it is a very interesting shift, thanks for sharing

Following the Hyundai raid, LG Energy Solution suspended most business trips to the US and directed employees to return home immediately. It comes less than two months since South Korea committed $350B in US investments, including a $26B Hyundai steel mill in Louisiana.

Survey stakes are in the ground at the San Rafael Valley, where DHS is preparing to wall off the last best corridor in Arizona for jaguars, ocelots & other species. Not a soul in sight.

Here’s the link to my story about how anti-cable conspiracies ran rampant the two Jersey Shore towns, where my family all lives, after postcards riddled with cables-cause-cancer misinformation showed up in people’s mailbox. A political org was behind it.

New Jersey’s plan to install offshore wind transmission faces opposition from some of the same groups that spread misinformation about whale deaths.

Yet again: plans to weaponize the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to shut down wind farms have nothing to do with actual concern for birds.

Hey, #birdsky.

The Trump administration released draft plans today stripping protections for the greater sage-grouse on ~50 million acres of public lands. The protections were meant to prevent grouse extinction.

Really pleased to have been able to contribute to the comment on sea level rise and the impressive work from all of my colleagues who contributed to this book-length review in a short period of time. Thanks to @andrewdessler.com and @bobkopp.net for organizing this effort!

It's possible that I'm still bitter - I was lucky to get my son and I through that very real life threatening experience, and it was a big part of the reason I went on to join the DOE's Grid Deployment office focusing on grid resilience and modernization.

This despite the fact that "dispatchable" generation played the dominant role in the blackout. Can't say that I'm sorry to see this foolish idea to prop up non-economic new gas power plants continue to falter. I remember when Texas leaders used to believe in letting the market decide...
A chart from ERCOT showing the level of power plant outages during Winter Storm Uri by technology type.

I lived through Uri as the solo parent of a toddler, moving houses 2 times to stay safe. A week later I testified on behalf of the solar industry at the state Senate hearing that was designed to position renewable energy as the scapegoat.
colinme.bsky.social
"Gov. Greg Abbott and other Republican leaders were quick to blame trouble with wind and solar power generation for the power outages. While renewables did struggle ... so did natural gas power generation after power plant equipment and some pipelines that supply gas to the plants froze.""

"The fund was created in the wake of Winter Storm Uri, the February 2021 storm that plunged most of the state into blackouts during freezing weather for days, leaving hundreds of people dead."
