None of the wizards exhibit much true power. The most "successful" is famously inept. Maybe Lord Vetinari? He usually gets his own way through a combination of preternatural psychological insight and machiavellian morality, but his power is bounded by the politically possible

It's clear she doesn't always play, though, so that's not right. Other candidates. Death? While inevitable, he isn't actually powerful. Mostly, we see his lack of agency and inability to be other than what he is, so not powerful then

It allowed all the farmers of a region to form a band that could repel raiders and might have been a crucial structure in the creation of Greek democracy since it is definitely more egalitarian than relying on smaller numbers of mounted warriors

Robin Lane Fox in The Classical World says that hoplite were landowners, but not necessarily large land owners. It would have been something like a local militia, and everyone provided their own armour and weapons. The wealthier were better armed, but also closer to the front.
