Who had “Isabel Oakeshott writing propaganda for the Libyan National Army” on their 2025 bingo card?

Too busy doomscrolling on X to adequately prepare for an interview, then try to subvert the interviewer by rejecting the premise of their questions? Kemi B keeps being relatable 💫

It’s one of those points that could be technically correct but completely implausible and so creates the impression the speaker is being alarmist. Shades of ‘80 million Turks’…

Presumably that model would be perfect to defend against the *36 million migrants* the CPS guy said could be on the way to the UK 🙃

All CBS reporters now required to identify themselves to sources as being “from the fucking news”.

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

Why is the UK government still on X? This tweet about helping students from Gaza has a sea of racist bile in the comments and QTs.

People using the heinous attack on Heaton Park synagogue as an opportunity to flout ignorance and bigotry. The name 'Jihad' does not mean one is predestined to be a terrorist from birth. If al-Shamie arrived in the UK as a child his domestic radicalisation seems more key than his immigration status.

Labour removing one of the last safe routes for asylum seekers will only benefit smugglers. If Starmerism can be defined as anything it's daily performative cruelty against the oppressed, for no political gain.

An honest government would admit to the public that crises will continue to force people to move, a small % of whom end up in the UK, and rather than melt into apoplexy when they get to the Channel establish orderly pathways for their legal arrival and successful integration.

The Dublin system is not only notoriously dysfunctional, it is a NIMBY invention of the wealthy northern European countries for southern countries to act as border thugs and asylum warehouses and keep bedraggled refugees far away. It is not a fair system to aspire to join.

Top nationalities of people on small boats: Eritrea,Iran, Sudan,Syria & Afghanistan. All have historically high asylum acceptance rates due to acute ongoing crises in those countries which are barely covered or discussed by UK media. The less we know about them, the less we care.

Brexit, 'one-in-one-out', Dublin system, French gendarmes. These are all parochial British conversations about how to stop asylum seekers who have almost completed their journey. It completely ignores what triggered their movement in the first place.
connellyandrew.bsky.social
While it can be claimed that a post-Brexit UK offers a chance for asylum seekers turned down in other EU countries to apply here, safe in the knowledge they cannot be Dublin returned, I haven't seen any data to indicate that this is what motivates the majority of people crossing.

Having riddled the French ports with police, barbed wire and surveillance tech, the UK government completely failed to prepare for the inevitability of a small boat route emerging from the beaches - even after this exact thing had been playing out on the Greek islands since 2015.
connellyandrew.bsky.social
It presupposes that the pre-Brexit Dublin system was a magic wand that would have saved UK from its "small boats crisis." But UK's transfer requests were frequently:
1) successfully challenged 2) mismanaged by Home Office and 3) denied by EU states already hosting many migrants.
connellyandrew.bsky.social
It is fashionable to blame Brexit and Farage for "small boats" but all that does is reinforce the framing of asylum seekers as problems to deal with and pieces to be shuffled around. Given the current climate of hate speech and pogroms, that is unhelpful. It's also misleading. 🧵

UK and EU anti-immigration demagogues will jump on this as proof that they too can remove asylum seekers to Iran except:
a) they are not America
b) this is one plane, not hundreds, a plot twist not a border policy

The Health Secretary tells NHS workers "you are home" the day after the Home Secretary threatened them all with hostile environment rhetoric. These two positions are not compatible and voters will notice.

Laziness is also an option. But lazy journalism that recycles entrenched tropes also contributes to a toxic environment.

I wonder what kind of politics is held by the Times editor that decided to use a photo of asylum seekers in a boat to illustrate a story about migrant workers arriving on legal routes.

Tough new conditions to be imposed on migrants who want to settle in the UK will not apply to more than a million people who arrived in the UK under the post-Brexit immigration surge
Labour’s tough new rules will not apply to migrants already in UK
