Thanks for sharing this; so many nuggets in it. Great to read a perceptive take delivered with rhetorical flare. The road to LC reform: paved with ...?

Absolutely agree. I've lost track of all the CPDs I've done (mandated and voluntary) only to have their energy fade and / or the key ideas become unclear or distort.

A small community of likeminded teachers - linked by WhatsApp or other social media - helps keep what's learned fresh.

Oh OK, you twisted my arm. 🙃 It was 'Running the Room' by @tombennett71.bsky.social. But I think it could work with other books and, perhaps, more people. A WhatsApp group of no more than half a dozen, perhaps. Can be combined, of course, with periodic real life meet ups.

Best CPD for me - does this count? - was reading a book on a particular area of teaching alongside a teacher in another school. Read the same chapters each fortnight. Chatted via WhatsApp voicemail about it. Implemented. Failed (often hilariously). Improved(-ish). Spent a term on one book. #edchatie

Conor Farnan, English teacher at Post Primary, Wicklow.

I agree with Conor: I don't think quality control can any more be restored centrally. People will vote with their feet in terms of what they engage with.

Discussions (like this one) around what actually constitutes good CPD are useful.
