Democracies are open-ended experiments in adaptation, constantly testing assumptions about a better future. To do so, they must factor in the unknown. Democracies that disregard the unknown are simply nation-states with elections.

In Vietnam, trying to grasp what life feels like fifty years after the war.

My answer so far: it was worth it.

I believe people often convince themselves when they lie, ignore facts, or distort our shared sense of reality.
In doing so, they reveal less about the world and more about themselves—enough for me to see whether they are a potential ally or a foe.
And that’s all I need to know.
