Much of Kansas is laid out in a grid. With how flat the state is, this was the easiest way to divide it up to be homesteaded. The roads laid down are each a mile apart, forming square mile blocks (called " sections") that contain four quarter-sections (160 acres each - the typical homestead). Most of these roads, carved out in the late 1800s, still exist today. Though Kansas is relatively flat, it is not actually completely flat. Prior to this grid work of roads, indigenous people and early white settlers/traders trod their own paths along rivers, around hills and into valleys. The gridded roads essentially ignore these early paths, but many still exist. And nearly all of them contain little surprises if you know where to look. I found this house on one such road. It is an early homestead whose land was probably among those section plots, but whose access was one of those non-conforming roads. . . . This is a shot that I really enjoy. I saw it on my drive in and the scene just caught my eye. I wanted a photo that had a hazy and grainy feel despite the fact that it was bold and sunny. I assumed I couldn't have this because of the light, but a couple of things happened. First, this is Lomography Potsdam. It was on sale (like half-off). I cannot be sure, but it's very extremely possible that it's on sale because the rolls are bad. After processing, the scans revealed a multitude of tiny black dots all over the shot. I re-scanned and removed them. I thought it was maybe my fixer at first, but after fixing another emulsion that I developed, the specs were only on the Potsdam. There was also emulsion damage on some of the frames, seemingly coming from poor coating. Second, I wanted to develop this in HC-110. I got mixed up and accidentally developed this in FA-1027 (F76+). I didn't realize this until six minutes into developing. I had just mixed up a new batch for a tank of HP5, but poured it into the Potsdam tank instead. Brilliant. This could have worked out, but my developer is apparently giving up the ghost. I wish I could buy this in a powdered form, but unfortunately I can't. So two rolls of this were tragically under-developed. Same with four sheets of Fomapan 100. So much chaos in one tiny tank. But a few photos worked out well enough to share, and I'll share them. The photo here was taken this past weekend at one of my favorite spots. This scene will still be there when I return. Hopefully I'll retake this with a better sky and develop it with something that actually works. . . . This past weekend I did a couple of days visiting some of my favorite places, including many that I had shot before. It's sort of my way of keeping tabs. One house that I've shot for over a decade is now gone. I knew it wouldn't be long - most of it fell down last year. But sadly, it didn't survive the winter. This old grain elevator will be standing for decades to come though. It was built by the first owner of the land and for some reason he used running boards from old Ford Model Ts for the steps on the staircase leading up to the ladder. I don't know why he would have done this, but if he had built the stairs out of wood, they'd probably be gone by now. This staircase was constructed to last the life of the elevator. On a technical side, two things. 1) The film holder I used has now been retired. It was likely as old as the building here. The baffle has finally failed and we've got a light leak. 2) I wasn't sure the lens could handle such a rear tilt (done to bring the building parallel to me). Alas, it can, even though it's got a very tiny image circle. I took a bunch of photos, and will be developing them for a week or so. Both shoot days, the sky was cloudless. Usually this is enough for me to cancel a trip, but I wanted to see the wildflowers again before they all die. I was still a bit early for the Mariposa Lily, which doesn't bloom until most of the other flowers are gone. . . .
