We all have at least 1 X chromosome, so one could argue that we are base-female. Only the addition (e.g. SRY) and/or absence of genes instruct the embryo to develop male testes usually via the degenerated y chromosome. So biological sex is binary: X|y, yet also a spectrum: /X+y*/
