It seems pretty clear to me now: Keir Starmer would rather lose to Reform than to the Labour left, which is his real enemy. Any policy that might recover lost ground with voters has to be struck down, as it looks like a concession to the Labour left. And he and his team cannot contemplate that.

Showing the viability of careers in the creative sector to people from Black and Ethnic Minority Backgrounds is crucial in building racial diversity in the sector.

One such finding from a 2023 report by CCW on the state of the film and TV industry in Wales.
An illustration showing four professionals from diverse ethnic backgrounds in the UK. From upper left: a young Central Asian female lawyer dressed in a suit, a middle-aged South East Asian man with a grey beard wearing a yellow hard hat and protection goggles, a young doctor with curly black hair on a wheelchair, and a non-binary black camera operator.

Take a look at the great work of our affiliate comic book artist, Scott Devantier.

Energetic, whimsical, slightly dystopia-coded, all-interesting.

We believe this particular case study is thanks to the research of @barnaclebarclay.bsky.social who combines coastal archaeology and conservation paleobiology to look at human-animal-environment relations.

Case studies of conservation paleobiology in action?
Of course! Part of an illustration series commissioned by @erinmdillon.bsky.social to showcase how the field can lead to real world changes.

The example here shows coastal clam beds in British Columbia and how they support local environments.
A vertical illustration showing a British Columbia coastal landscape. At the top, trees. At the bottom, a coastal line of clams.

Jay is the lead author on a fascinating paper I was involved in, about how male mimicry by female hummingbirds provides the first example of a type of signaling system that we predicted from theoretical principles over a decade ago.

This is infuriating.

And I believe it's due to anti-trans bias.

My NSF PRFB on the genetics of female polymorphism in hummingbirds was terminated yesterday.

I don't have much to say, I'm just sad. We've discovered so much, and could have gone so much further.

If anyone else is in the same boat, esp postdocs, please reach out, it would be good to connect.

Recently read the whole of Icon. While very tropey, it is an artefact that stands the test of time while being very of its time. A comic that had something to say.

🧪 Based on similar evolutionary split times, it's like putting some narwhal genes into a beluga and claiming you have a narwhal...

(actually it's worse, b/c while LCA times are similar in both cases c. > 5 Ma, the cetacean populations interbred a bit until c. 1 Ma, but dire wolves stayed isolated)
