That, they allege, prompted Adani executives to meet local officials who could in turn convince distributors to sign up, promising to pay $265 million in bribes. Adani eventually lowered its initial price by about 15%. It began signing PPAs with regional utilities in 2021.

India’s system of securing generation before the offtake left SECI struggling to secure buyers- a setback for a deal worth billions in profit, US prosecutors argue.

But while Adani and New Delhi were keen to boost manufacturing, the financially strained distributors who had to buy the power just wanted the low rates that the reverse auction system is supposed to produce.

That lured Adani, at a cost. With manufacturing obligations included and few competitors, it won the rights in 2020’s giant auction to sell electricity for 2.92 rupees ($0.03) per kilowatt hour, almost a fifth above what smaller auctions averaged that year, according to BNEF data

These projects frequently benefit a select group, such as contractors or landowners, while the broader public, who bear the costs through taxes, sees limited benefits.

if this a serious question, it's because of the political economy of public transport systems. the tendency to invest in glamorous mega projects like light rail systems or metro lines, which often serve a small fraction of the population and come with high hidden costs.

EVs in India charged by grid fed by coal with emission factor of 0.95 Kg Co2/kWh giving 8 Kms per Kwh turns out to be emitting more Co2 than strong hybrid giving 27 kms per liter mileage and with petrol emission factor 2.3 kg-co2/litre.

Additionally, the CO2 emission factor of the grid is effectively passed through to EVs, reflecting the grid’s energy mix in the vehicle’s carbon footprint.

Nationally, India wants to have an addition of 18.98 GW of capacity with 128.5 GWh of storage in pumped storage by 2030.

The levelised tariff for PHP is assumed to be around INR 5/kWh for India.

On a federal level, India is pushing for pumped hydro storage, which through my research, is more suitable for balancing and ancillary services.

Thanks for this Jan. I have worked on building a regulatory framework for BESS for the Indian context. While undertaking a literature review, I came across a study that compares Pumped Hydro Storage to BESS on a life cycle level.
