Actually, yeah. My favorite UI elements are the ones that are evident what they are / how they function, without explicit labels. Health bars with visible notches to denote percentages, ammo counters with one number next to another (clip / total), grids displaying mini-maps with a dot for the player

That's sensible! Colors would have to be just right to visually distinguish at a glance, but that's not a huge barrier by any stretch.
I do think "layers" is about as straightforward a descriptor as you can get without injecting some setting flavor in. I wouldn't sweat it.

My biggest want with this kind of thing is swappable maps in the map screen, showing your relative position between the "front" and "back" spaces. Every implementation I see of this only lets you see the active map, and it messes with my spatial awareness.

The thing that frustrates me the most is the fundamental misunderstanding that the word "weird" puts targets on backs in this climate. Anything queer (yes, furry content, hetero or otherwise, falls under queerness in a fashion) is already under attack.
