There's a man with a gun over there, telling me I've got to beware.
What miles did Discord take? The base product was never worsened, no features were ever taken away and sold back to you. For all of Discord's very real and tangible problems, their monetization scheme is about as low on the list as it gets.

I understand it, it's no secret that people use Discord as Google Drive, and a decade of unfunny memes being perpetually on-demand is not cheap. Maybe they could implement a temporary file mechanic that has a higher limit, but the file is deleted after a few days? Or ability to direct p2p transfer?

IMO besides the ID checking, the biggest problems with Discord was the ways it killed forums, the inability for E2EE, and the inability to selfhost/federate, all of which Fluxer claims to be addressing. I am certainly not going to put all my eggs in this basket quite yet, but VERY promising so far.

To my understanding this feature does not exist on any other platform. Closest I can think of is Reddit flairs and Facebook Groups anon/nicknames, but they really aren't direct comparisons at all, otherwise most platforms simply do not have the "community segmentation" for such a feature to exist.

Should it be a basic feature of every social platform? Sure. Money should also grow on trees, but it don't. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

I don't want to be an ass, but "you gotta make money to support the development" and "for no reason" within almost the same sentence? You know the reason. Would rather have a platform worry about money up front than pull a years long rug pull as VC slush funds dry up. Purely cosmetic, too.

Whether it’s Kamala Harris buying a $300 pot for her cookware collection or Donald Trump buying a $22,500 depreciated woman from Jeffrey Epstein, both sides have made questionable purchases that raise eyebrows.
