Wheeled through the hallways, past open doors and dozens of empty beds.

Pressed linens whisper softly of kindnesses. I wrap the day up with steamed curtains and folded sheets. It’s the scent of warm laundry that is so striking, introducing a sense of newness, and of light. Reading the obituaries, I cross my fingers so hard I get a cramp.
