I play a ton of random old games. I wish to fully learn Japanese someday so I can play more untranslated games with my wife.
2nd consecutive run already knocking it down by around an hour. excited to learn this game more

I have recently ran through JP disk system Metroid 1 and one run was me trying to do it fast (first) and 2nd was 100%. Both were under 2 hours and the best time and I think this game is still pretty fun. Now my only question is... what the hell is with the bags lol

Next stage is an ice level.. The level doesn't give any particular vibe BUT the midboss here is a mammoth like creature that shields itself and causes platforms to fall from the sky before rushing into them... much like the Tundra Man midboss. Intentional or not who knows due to the recency of both.

Next stage starts out as obvious as it can be using the platforms from Cubit Foxtar's stage in Mega Man Zero 3, even doing them over and under spikes as your weight affects which way the platform sinks down.

Moving onto Autochrome, he is a laser using boss that has a lock-on and while it doesn't work exactly like Cyber Peacock from X4, it is still a laser-based lock on and the attack comes from his wings. For Autochrome's desperation, he summons giant lasers above screen, exactly like Storm Owl's stage.

A floating orb goes up and down and then blows up when attacked, it's orange. In Mega Man Zero 1 (and 2) orange orb enemies float in the exact way up and down and then explode when attacked.
September 19, 2025 at 3:13 AM
Next level, I would almost say these enemies don't need any introduction. They're the classic Mega Man X (though these are more similar to ZX sprite-wise) evil wheel enemy.

as another side note since I didn't grab it last time. After the worker bosses explode in iX2, they reveal their doll-like inside that almost all of them share. In Mega Man X8's boss rush, the bosses were actually copies of the bosses using New Gen Reploids' copy ability, reverting when they die.

Vespa's only other big reference I can see is the way she goes in a V shape downward and upward off screen towards you. While the more obvious reference is to Mighty No. 9's plane boss, Aviator who also does this pattern, it manages to be an homage to Storm Eagle in Maverick Hunter X more so.
September 19, 2025 at 3:00 AM
Moving onto the boss, Vespa uses a wind-based projectile animated similar to Storm Owl's Double Cyclone in Mega Man X4. Both attacks move towards your position.

While not exact, this level also features and indestructible enemy while she's shielded that bursts out of a budded plant to attack. In Mega Man X5, there is also a similar plant that's indestructible until it opens. Both happen to shoot out 4 objects, one being slicers the other being spiders.

More spiked vines in the level can be burned down with the Doomsday Charge EX Weapon, they are about 1 block wide and 2-3 blocks tall. The shape of them ends up resembling the robotic spiked vines in Mega Man 8 in Search Man's stage that can also be burned down via Flame Sword.
September 19, 2025 at 2:40 AM
More from Mega Man Zero 4, there are vines that regrow almost instantly after being cut down. both of these are present gimmicks throughout their respective stages.
September 19, 2025 at 2:33 AM
Double reference on this enemy. Not only is it placed in a similar manner to the King Neptune enemies in Web Spider on a tree stump at the start of the stage, it also shoots out a missile that splits out exactly how a Variant Missile splits it's missile apart from Mega Man Zero 4.
September 19, 2025 at 2:28 AM
Continuing the thread.. the jungle level uses similar aesthetics to Web Spider's stage from Mega Man X4 starting out with tree stumps inside shallow water on the backdrop of an open jungle.
September 19, 2025 at 2:24 AM
As a side note: Bosses die by getting cut in half like the Mega Man Zero series, no other Gunvolt or Luminous Avenger iX game has done this before. This also applies to basic enemies in both.

Dacite also a fire uppercut which while isn't EXCLUSIVE to the Akuma reference himself, Magma Dragoon, Dacite has still referenced 2 other Fire Mavericks thus far. I'm sorry for the low quality on some of the Mega Man images btw I promise...
September 16, 2025 at 11:05 PM
Taking another move from a different boss, Dacite throws out multiple bombs on the ground and then dashes across them igniting them as he passes by each one. Burn Dinorex/Mattrex uses this exact move in Mega Man X5.
September 16, 2025 at 11:04 PM
The boss Dacite has quite a few moves taken from Mega Man bosses. Starting here with throwing flaming knives up and down in a similar fashion to Flame Stag throwing Fireballs upward and downward. Also as another nod, Dacite turns blue at low HP and in the boss rush starts out blue.

Right back into ANOTHER upward lava chase referencing Mega Man X2's level... A bonus emblem (1-Up in Hard Mode) is seen on the right in a small alcove as a reward for being fast and getting it before the lava rises. The room is set up almost 1:1 how X2's is with a 1-Up there instead.
September 16, 2025 at 11:01 PM
Directly after the lava chase upwards, you are thrown into a horizontal lava chase with multiple enemies along the way and obstacles to dash through. In Area K of Mega Man ZX, a very similar lava sprite and chase is done inside of its volcano level.
